According to the Administration for Community Living, each year, an estimated 5 million older adults are abused, neglected, or exploited.
Older Americans lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation, funds that could be used to pay for basic needs such as housing, food, and medical care. Unfortunately, it occurs in every demographic and can happen to anyone—a family member, a neighbor, even you. It is estimated that only one in five of these crimes are discovered. All month, we will be providing tips on how YOU can avoid fraud:
• Tip #9: Do not deposit a check and then wire money back. For the bank to uncover a fake check that you deposited to your account can take weeks. If you receive a check in the mail asking that you deposit the money to your account and then wire the cash back to them – DO NOT DO IT! If a check that you deposit to your account turns out to be fake, you will be responsible for repaying the bank.
• Tip #10: Sign up for free scam alerts from the FTC at ftc.gov/scams. Get the latest advice and tips on scams sent to you via e-mail.
