Another Reason for Class BasketballPosted Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 10:07 PM
Congratulations to WRV girls and Joe Pigg on their sectional victory and good luck at the Southwestern Shelbyville regional. I also need to congratulate Linton's eigth grade team who went 19-0 and won the SWIAC tourney. I had the pleasure of watching them play twice. They were very impressive in skill level and unselfishness. I think Coach Clayton will be happy to welcome in this group next year.
Three of my former assistants won sectionals last week, Joe Pigg, Sammy Karr (Turkey Run) and Steve Meurer (North Knox). Good luck to all in the regional. We know that Steve coached under tough conditions last Saturday, and hope that his dad gets well soon. Tom Oliphant gave me a program from Lawrence North HS in Indianapolis. Several things struck me as interesting. 6 of their players have already signed to play at major division 1 schools and only 1 is a senior. 4 are going to Louisville, 1 to Purdue, and 1 to Kentucky. Another thing I found interesting is that they have TEN coaches counting their strength coach - including an assistant freshman coach. Their players probably handle the recruiting scene well because its probably the second time they've been recruited. Now, for all you people that are for 1 class basketball, how would you like to be in their sectional. The boys sectional draw is out. Locally, NC and Shakamak drew each other right off the bat. I'm still going with the Lakers to win that sectional - its time they put together 3 good games in a row. Bloomfield has a tough draw in the Eastern Greene sectional. They must play a South Knox team is capable of exploding. The Spartans should know that with this much time to prepare, Ron McBride will be tough to beat. My prediction is that the winner of this game will take the sectional. I'd like to thank the 13 people who responded to my blog last week before they took the comments off. They helped prove my point. Finally, good luck to all seniors in the sectional. Give everything you have since this is your last chance. Next year when you are in the stands, this will mean more to you than it does now. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I'm not expecting much from Shakamak. Is it baseball season yet?
Speaking of class sports, does anyone else feel like the 1996 Shakamak baseball team gets shortchanged in the conversation of "greatest shakamak baseball team ever", just because they were derailed by the 1-class system? Everybody always brings up the teams recently that have advanced to the "1A" title game in Victory Field. Not taking anything away from what those teams accomplished, but I still feel that the 1996 team was the best Shakamak had ever seen, and if the current class system had been around back then, there wasn't a class "1A" team in the state that could have touched them. Undefeated for the regular season and sectional, ranked #4 at 22-0 (in the 1 class system), and it took a Martinsville team in the regional (I believe ranked #3 at the time and a current class "4A" school) to knock them out and hand them their only loss of the season. Beat all of the Vigo county schools by the 10-run rule I'm fairly certain. Not to mention the showdown with Northview at Shakamak that spring. I'm just saying that they deserve to at least be in the discussion.
If class sports had been around then, I'm sure Chip Sweet would have been crowned champion 2 or 3 times with some of those teams in the early and mid nineties.
Agreed. That 1996 team was phenominal
If Shakamak wins the sectional, I will take back everything bad I've said about the coach. They have a tough road ahead of them.
As I understand it, class basketball, or any sport, is supposed to level the playing field allowing smaller schools the chance to go against each other in order to let everyone have a chance. What I can't seem to grasp is how the level of competition, and the attendances at games, has gone down since the class system has been initiated. Do you remember on the middle King Kong movie when Geoff Bridges describes what will happen now that Kong is gone. He says the locals will probably end up drunk and un-motivated. Single class basketball was always the Kong for us at Bloomfield, and our success was measured by how well we did against these larger schools. I remember, and you can still see, teams on the walls at Bloomfield who made it a long way in the tournaments. These achievements meant more, because they were going against Kong. If one of our area schools does win a State Title it will still mean a lot, but it will come with an asterisk in the form of 2A or 1A.
Showing my age here. The SHS baseball team in 1971 wasn't too shabby. I think they could hang right in there with 96.
I'm fairly certain that the teams who were in the same sectional as LN under the single-class format were very similar in size and would have been able to hang with them. I'll actually be surprised if they win their sectional this year seeing as how they will have to beat at least Cathedral or North Central (Indianapolis) in the championship.
Snakeplisken, I think that the drop in attendance at high school games has more to do with people and kids having more at their disposal in terms of entertainment on a Friday or Saturday night. I agree with you Kong statement, though, because one of the fun things I remember about growing up was watching Bloomfield beat the bigger schools they always played. The tournament run of 93-94 with Shane Miller's team is one of my fondest memories when it comes to Bloomfield basketball.
Has everyone forgot about the 1988 Shakamak baseball team. This team rolled thru the regional in a decisive manner. It was a one class system at the time and a sectional which was played at Sullivan which was stacked with talented teams.
This team also had 3 players go on to play division 1 baseball, 1 to play division 1 basketball, 1 to play division 2 baseball and several others which had an option to continue their baseball careers.
You see, my point exactly. Whether it's 1971, 1988, 1996, or whoever, these teams all seem to get left out of any discussion on the great SHS baseball teams. Just because they ran into big school powerhouses in the tournament and didn't make it to the state finals. People only seem to want to talk about the recent teams, again, not taking anything away from those teams, but they didn't have to go through the big schools come tournament time.
Sounds like a barbershop on this blog. I'll take the 96 team.
Why should Shakamak teams compare with each other at any year or any sport..... A true Shakamak fan would realize all Shakamak teams are full of talent and capable of winning. Go Lakers....
I agree it would be fun to get the chance to Play a series with each team... at the time they played...
Oldoak, it's been done before. I'm just saying why not bring all the teams into consideration. Not just the recent ones. Class sports has brought about a better chance of winning, but at the same time it somewhat eliminates discussion of past teams accomplishments.
Teams now are up against many very qualified Church School teams.
Some of them are stacked with good players like the Shakamak baseball games of 2007.
In Indy..Shakamak should have won.
In 1966 the only church schools to my knowledge were Catholic schools....Puts a little different light on it...
Are they allowed to pick and choose player from different areas???
Dude, I'm glad you included "at the time they played...", because you wouldn't want to see the '71 team play a series of anything right now, except maybe Scrabble.
I would like to see a bunch of unmotivated drunken locals play baseball against King Kong though.
Joe Hart>Mitch Albom
I think Mitch has bigger ears and someone told me that he can actually play golf. Oh, not that Joe can't play too. Gee, what was I thinking?
I wouldn't use the term "pick and choose", but I do think they can try to convince parents to pay the money to give their child a "private" school education. Therefore, it doesn't really matter where a kid lives, if their parents want them to attend a certain private school, i.e. Lafayette Central Catholic, or Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, they can pay the money to send them there. I do believe that this is done alot of times for athletic reasons, instead of academic reasons. How else can you explain the year-in, year-out success of the aforementioned teams. Now even Vincennes Rivet is getting in the act I think. Washington Catholic still hasn't figured it out however.
Stewie, don't accuse Rivet of recruiting. Shakamak has done more recruiting in recent years than Rivet ever will. Parents send there kids to schools like Lafayette Central Catholic and Rivet because they are the top performing schools academically in their area.
A true recruiting Catholic school is Evansville Mater Dei. Watch them move up and down a class in both football and basketball. After they get moved down a class. They go out and recruit too many for the next realignment. They have probably changed classes more than any other school in the state.
I never said Shakamak didn't. I never said the private schools were the only ones who did it. I realize other schools do it too. If I remember right, since Joe Hart wants to accuse LN of recruiting (don't we hear enough from Jason Penske every weekend), wasn't it one of his Union teams that had 2 kids from Hymera and one or two from Linton? Seems like I remember hearing that.
I believe I did say that private schools can offer a better education (since that was your main point). However, I just think that the coaches at these schools can use that as a selling point to prospective athletes and their parents.
You don't find it funny that Rivet has been TERRIBLE for years in athletics and now all of a sudden has solid teams year in and year out? If you don't think that their coaches have finally figured out how to sell their academic program in order to get athletes away from schools like Lincoln, you really are naive.
I really couldn't care less if private schools (or any school for that matter), recruit players. As long as the parents are paying for their son/daughter to go there, I don't really see what the big deal is.
Schools in this area have always pulled players from other school districts. Joey Hart lived in Bloomfield's district, but went to Union where his father taught. Shakmak's Marc Allen (younger brother to Michael) lived in Terre Haute South's district, but went to Shakamak where his parents were both teachers. Didn't Union's JT and Clark Golish live in North Central's district?
Stewie: "I do believe that this is done alot of times for athletic reasons, instead of academic reasons".
The only reason anyone would send their kid to Shakamak would be for athletic reasons.
If a couple of AAU parents decide to send their kids to the same school, is that recruiting? If so, Rivet is the biggest culprit in girls basketball! The boys that went to Shakamak all had ties to Shakamak. It isn't as if they had no reason. One of the boys probably went for baseball more so than basketball anyway.
Most anyone would agree with class basketball today. However, it is a sad commentary that it took grade school recruiting and if memory serves me that was called cheating, and the other factors mentioned in the article also seem beyond the realm of High School and the missions of High Schools. Class basketball is here and makes sense now, but it was not sold to the public the way you rationalize it now. Was this a long term plan for recruiting, or is this a development of the plan, or was there a plan?
In the Golish boy's case they lived in the school corporation's area. When they got out of elementary I believe they had a choice between NC and Dugger. They might have chose Dugger because of Basketball but no rules were broken or bent. And I'm not sure if Joey came to Dugger his hole 13 years of schooling but I don't believe he came at such an age to play basketball only. What I mean there is if he came in 4th grade how was he or his parent's to know if the other 4th graders were going to be really good ball players. Now if he came as a freshman that might be a little different. But I don't think that was the case. Same with the Chambers boy. He lived on County line road and had a choice to go to Dugger or Linton. He went to Dugger his whole life so wasn't for just sports. Now there have been some kids go to other schools for sports but I believe more have left other schools for Football reasons than basketball.. :)
I'd like to see the numbers of how many kids have transfered to Linton, Union or Eastern Greene (or even Owen Valley or North Daviess) over the past five years just to play football. I agree, Bigballer, more kids have probably transfered for football than any other sport.
I've lost my running count of WRV players lost since their community leagues inception in the early 90's. At one one point it was reaching 30, but that was nearly a decade ago. I'd say it is well into 30+ students now. Don't worry they have 10-15 boys playing basketball(barely enough for a JV team).
They have some kids coming through the ranks that want desperately to continue playing football after JH. Wonder how many of those will transfer?
Didn't Chambers go to Linton his first year or two...I can't believe they would stoop so low as to recruit a 1st grader :)
Chambers might have can't be possitive but have a relation that was in that class and I know he was in that class at a young age. But you know Joe had a sense for talent.... LOL..... I think the Chambers boy was winning RC's off Joe when he was a third grader... LOL
Some one said that if you went to Shakamak it would have to be for athletic reasons, incredible. I know two people who went to Shakamak, were good athletes, major league material actually, and well above the bar in academics. That post is so offensive it is difficult to believe it made the cut. Do you really know where A. Einstein went to grammar school?
Joe does have a sense for talent, check the record,it is transparent, available and excellent.
Joe was injured playing Ice Hockey when he was young and that injury has caused a little hitch in Joe,s golf swing, and he ate a bad pizza and has never recovered from that ailment also, or he would be playing par golf on a regular basis. But when you eat that many pizzas, well many things can happen to you.
Recruiting is an ugly business, IU comes to mind and the coach they bought from OK. In college it is ugly, when you get to high school it is uglier, when it goes to grade school, you just must look away. And it is difficult to see how this helps the kids, it is obvious how it burdens them in the long run.
Hitting below the belt; there is not a name that comes to mind that shows that a kid did not play for his Father if the opportunity presented itself.

It is funny how stupid and ignorant people can sound when ever they dont know the facts and are jealous of somebody elses success.

Let me tell you what really is happening at Rivet. I dont know if you can recruit girls girls in 3rd grade, but this is when all these girls started playing at the YMCA together. I remember watching them play and thinking Wow these girls have a lot of potential. Tim Young, the current Lady Patriots coach, must have seen the same thing,or just loves basketball. He conducted fundamental clinics for 3 or 4 years for these girls and also the girls from Lincoln who went to the Semi-state last year. You may want to read that last sentence again, I said FUNDAMENTALS clinic. They did not work on shooting, and plays--they worked on fundamentals. Dribbling, pivoting, rebounding, spacing, defense, passing--all that boring stuff. You look at any good team and they are built by having strong fundamentals. Since 3rd grade, they have lost a couple girls that could have made this team even better.
Tim, then took the girls on the IBA scene and had very good success. This success was not given to them, they had to work for it. Six to nine months out of the year spent on conditioning, free-throws etc. etc..
Do we recruit at Rivet? Yes we do. Do we recruit for athletes? No we dont. We recruit to survive!! We have a high school enrollment of around 110 or 120. Every year there seems to be a rumor of Rivet closing--we have to recruit to survive. If you look at the students that are in the system, they are normally from a family that has graduated from Rivet, Central Catholic or St.
Rose. Some of these girls had sisters on the teams that went 0-42. It was so nice to beat Barr-Reeve this year, because we all know they recruit--Can we all say Liz Horton.
As a graduate of Rivet, I felt I had to write this reply. These girls have worked to hard for to many years to have peoples ignorance and jealousy down play what they have worked so hard to accomplish.
Go Lady Patriots--win state!!!
Okay I wasn't meaning to cut Joe below the belt. I've known Joe for almost all my life and my dad has known him for longer. I'm sure if my dad was coaching I would want to play for him too. And I understand your complaint there BBperson but to complain about recruiting or someone calling your old school out then turning around and complaining about another school well not exactly sure why you would do that. You took a cheap shot then defended yourself and school nicely. Then turned around and took a cheap shot at another school. LOL... If your coach down there has camps like that then good for him and the team. I think there needs to be more of that around here. And you will be rewarded when the time comes if it is all true. But you have to be understanding around this part when a few of our best teams have been beaten by teams that recruited players. And not when they were in grade school either. Maybe using your school was a bad example. Good luck to your girls if they are still playing!
I would like to congratulate the Dugger 5th grade boys basketball team for coming in second place in the WRV-Worthington tourney last Saturday. They won the first game 19-18 in overtime!!!! And no recruiting here, they played with a big mix of fourth graders and fifth graders............
My kids go to school in Lawrence Township and last week I saw a few coaches at the day care watching a 4 year old shooting 10 footers and dunking on a 4 foot goal.
It happens everywhere!
I posed a question...sorry to offend you. So every girl on the Rivet team would have went there regardless of basketball? Just curious. I've heard South Knox, Lincoln, and even Rivet people say a few wouldn't have...but who knows. I'll still be rooting for the Patriots come this weekend regardless. Too bad it won't be a WRV/Rivet rematch.
All you guys sound like great fans of sports and it is appreciated for sure. Joe has always been my favorite coach, for many reasons, one that stands out most is that he likes kids. Your kids and others kids also. Perhaps the best stat is that his assistant coaches are now head coaches. Congrats to them. It is a family affair regarding Joe, and Joey, I do not think my Father missed a game of Joey's if there was any way he could be there, I am proud of his friendship to High School sports, and proud of all of you for being fans. Enjoy the games, yell at the refs and back your team, show respect for the other teams, these are kids. Watch "Hoosiers" a couple of times a month and treasure your geography, there is no better place to watch or play basketball than Central Indiana, anywhere in the world. Switz City still has the best place to play ball,or watch basketball than any place I have seen. Just getting to trot out through that tunnel one time, and look up and see a full house provides a wonderful memory that lasts forever. There is not a week or day that goes by that one forgets Jay Borders leading the Tigers back from 30 down to a win. Or Rusty Miller knocking down 61 for a one point win. Or as coach Weaver told me as I was looking at the plaque, "we needed every one of those points, we won by one." There are so many great memories about basketball in Indiana, go to a game and enjoy yourself, it is real, not tv. Be careful what you wish for, it might come true. Love all the comments, some are harsh, some logical, all enthusiastic, what more could a person want.
Rivet tried to recruit Liz Horton. I've seen the proof.
