World Serious?Posted Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 3:01 AM
Raymond, a six foot six inch seadog.
I sure wish that I would have put some money on a Rays-Phillies World Series this year. Let's see…the Rays have never had a winning season prior to this year and the Phillies…well they have lost more games than any franchise in MLB history. Of the original dozen franchises from the beginning of "modern baseball history", the Phillies were the last team to finally win a World Series…in 1983, and they haven't won any since. That great Phillies team of 1983 had a starting lineup with these season batting averages: .236, .245, .230, .255, .254, .258, .275, .265 and that included, Hall of Famers Joe Morgan, Mike Schmidt and everyone's favorite convicted tax evader, Pete Rose. The third Hall of Famer on that team, Steve Carlton, had a sterling 15-16 record on the mound. Did you know that the Phillies were known as the Philadelphia Blue Jays in 1944-1945? It is rumored that Sandborn sued them and they changed back to the Phillies. The ageless Connie Mack led the Philadelphia Athletics to 5 World Series Championships and the Pittsburgh Pirates have won 5 Championships, so the State of Pennsylvania has 11 World Series titles, while Florida has 2. Pennsylvania's World Series' record is 11 wins out of 24 trips to the fall classic. Florida however, is a perfect 2 for 2 in their World Series' ventures. This State has never lost a World Series, how impressive. Neither has Alaska, but Alaska does have Sarah Palin and a great view of Russia from her back door? The Tampa Bay Rays best record prior to this year was 70-91 in 2004 under the guidance of Lou Piniella, who failed to get the Cubbies past the Bums this year. Joe Maddon must be some kind of miracle worker, actually Joe has never had a winning season either as a manager. My favorite Philly of all time is Melvin Earl Clark. http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/clar... I roomed with his son in college and got the opportunity to visit with Mel on several occasions. Of course my favorite Ray is Matt Garza. How can you not like a guy who beats the Red Sox twice in the playoffs? And how about B.J. Upton? He hit 9 homers during the regular season and already has 7 in the postseason. These four teams have never won a World Series: Rockies, Astros, Brewers, and Padres, but at least they have been there. These teams have never participated in a World Series: Mariners, Rays, Rangers, and Nationals. But now the Rays are there and I'm picking them to keep the State of Florida's slate clean with another World Series victory. I'll be in Mesquite giving some radioactive golf lessons for a few days, so sit back and enjoy the World Series. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Didn't the Phillies win the World Series in 1980 not 1983?
Very good eggman, only you and my son, Matt, caught that error. It was 1980 not 1983, the '83 team got beat in the WS.
My trip has started miserably and I don't leave until tomorrow. My car broke down tonight, so I'm relying on the Caddy to get me to the airport. Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.
I just got a chance to read.. and knew it was 80 cause my Orioles were on the short end of that... :( I was upset because the 4 games the 0's lost were when Mark Belanger was not playing... his replacement KiKO Garcia was making erros left and right.
Dude, your mind is getting as bad as mine. The Royals lost to the Phillies in 1980, the Orioles beat the Phillies in 1983. It was in the 1979 Series when the Orioles lost to the Pirates that Kiko wore the iron glove.
I just wish T. David would pick the Phillies and tell everyone their stats for the year and call it their destiny. Then the Rays would win for sure.
i thought the Orioles won the series in 1983? i am not a phillies fan but i do believe they lasst won it in 1980
I rememberd verey wrongly LOL--- yes the 19980 series was the Hemroid series and 79 was We are family..
hey I was in my first year at Rose--- please forgive me that 1980 mistake!
:) sorry for the added bandwidth I caused on this ! lol.
sorry, guess I should have read through the previous comments before I posted on here.
looks like the fightin phills are off to a good start thus far
make that 3 games to 1 now
Well what a party it was! My head is still spinning from all the excitement. Food and drink aplenty...what a feast! Trays of assorted antipasti to build our hunger, bitter aperitivos (someone called them southern tears) to wash them down. Then came plate after plate of deliciousness: First the pasta course of linguini di mare, then the sea bass and risotto, then the chicken and roasted red peppers, then the rib-eye with goat cheese and balsamic reduction, then a fresh spring mix salad with radicchio and walnuts. The red and white wines flowed like rivers and more stories were told. Simmons stood by the ice sculpture of Charlie Manuel ( which oddly began to melt into what looked like a crude looking bust of Joe Girardi ) and went on and on about how next year it will be the Yankees turn...Then came the dolce; a cream torta with fresh fruit and a dip of pistachio ice cream. And then the finale was a plate of salty aged cheese with sweet asti spumanti to settle the culinary affair. The night was late but the generous host of The Pepperoni Grill was not through as bottles of a fine single malt scotch, Balvenie 15, were sat upon the bar for all to enjoy. Oh what a night, what a night...
