Spies, Irregular Lies and Occasional Pop FliesPosted Thursday, October 30, 2008, at 5:11 PM
Yo Adrian...heck even a caveman can do it
"Yo Adrian", the Phillies won their second World Series. This might help eliminate that other "Rocky", Rocky Balboa, as the number one sports hero in the City of Brotherly Love. Speaking of whom, I happened to notice the other day that the lovely "Adrian Pennino" was playing the part of a therapist in one of those Geico "caveman" commercials. That's right, the 2 time Academy Award nominee, Talia Shire, is making Geico commercials. For those of you who didn't know, Talia was born a Coppola; a sister to the director Francis Ford Coppola. Also, in case you didn't know this tidbit of entertainment trivia, Nicholas Cage is her nephew. Talia was initially married to a music composer by the name of David Shire, who has, over the years, garnered several Grammy Awards himself and also won a Best Song Oscar for Norma Rae. Aden and I were watching our favorite Thomas the Train movie, "Thomas and the Magic Railroad", the other night when I finally recognized the Shining Time Station hostess. It was none other than Didi Conn, who played in the original Shining Time Station TV series several years ago. For those of you not into the younger (more intellectual) shows, you may remember Didi as Frenchy in the movie Grease. Strangely enough, the talented Didi Conn is now the current Mrs. David Shire. Also, in this movie, there is a talented young actress by the name of Mara Wilson. In this Thomas the Train movie she is visiting her grandfather, Burnett Stone, played by that Easy Rider of old, Peter Fonda. Mara Wilson also played the title role in "Matilda", a movie about a smart young girl with two really terrible parents, played by Danny DeVito and his real life partner, Rhea Perlman. "Matilda" was based on the book by the same name, which was written by that great children's author Roald Dahl. For you chocolate nuts, you might remember Dahls' great epic "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". This book was initially made into a movie starring Gene Wilder, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and again with Johnny Depp in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Roald Dahl was a British pilot early in WWII, who came to the United States in 1942 and worked in espionage activities with the great Canadien spy, William Stephenson (Code Name: Intrepid). Roald was later married to Gary Cooper's old fling, Patricia Neal, for over 30 years. Details of his espionage activities are very well presented in a recent book by Jennet Conant titled "The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington". Another member of this outfit was the famous James Bond 007 writer, Ian Fleming. "James Bond is a highly romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is ...William Stephenson" -- Ian Fleming. Some of you 007 fans might not realize it, but Ian Fleming also wrote that fantastic children's book, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". In the film of the same name they created my favorite character's name of all time, "Truly Scrumptious", played by the truly scrumptious, Ms. Sally Ann Howes. I'm taking the weekend off from all outside activities and just spending time with young Aden. I'm just going to sit around, read about "The Irregulars", watch "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", Rocky, Willy Wonka (and the Oompa Loompas), maybe a Thomas the Train movie or two, think about the Yankees winning number 27 next year, grill me a rib eye and a baked potato and maybe even get something "truly scrumptious" for dessert. Aden will probably have one of his favorites, beanie weenies or mini raviolis. Cheers and be safe out there trick or treatin'. I must have offended some Gary Cooper fans.
I thought it was a great article.
Thanks Mike, I thought I was blacklisted.
Sorry, I meant to comment earlier, but I dozed off in the middle of it all. :-)
Just kidding. Another very well written, interesting and amazingly interwoven blog. I stand (sit actually) in awe of your ability to find the most compelling relationships between seemingly unrelated people and events.
I don't think there are many Gary Cooper fans out there among your readership, but you may have ticked off a few caveman proponents.
I don't like to jump in here unless it's a topic that I have some knowledge of. I may only comment every third article, but I read every one, and every response. I was for Maine, because you have to pick the journals up, by the way.
This one made my brain itch. I was telling my wife about it last night while we were watching a Patricia Neal movie on TCM.
We're in a bit of a rut over here, and it may be that we all are just waiting to see how this shakes out Tuesday.
And as long as the kids are ok, nothing else really matters. Sort of like the bacon and books..
I have a Revell Hercules model set for Aden, but it's going to take an address and Grandpas help.
I'm afraid the Hercules model would get here a might bit late, Mike. This is my last week with Aden for quite awhile. The Maine/San Antonio trip got set aside in favor of a trip to Denver. Aden's mother moved out there a few weeks ago, so this coming weekend, I'm taking him out to her. His fondness for trains prompted me to make the trip by rail. We are taking the train (California Zephyr) from Chicago to Denver and we've got a sleeper, which should make it a nice trip for him. It's just not a trip that I wanted to make. I'll just have to buck up and accept it.
C&J's Dad, I just reread my article, it was a bit of a sleeper. Not enough emotion in it.
Shake it off, Simmons.
Everyone writes a stinker occasionally. You'll bounce back.
A stinker you say? That is a good description of it, no doubt. I don't know BbBanter, I just don't seem motivated anymore. As Sir Topham Hatt would say, "You're just not a useful writer anymore." It may be time to send me to the scrap yard.
I think I'll not write anything more until I get back from my trip next weekend. Thanks for the constructive criticism and support.
Smile Keith...We still love ya.
hey I thought it was a very interesting topic --- and had several OH ya's in it... sorry I was busy to comment
Thanks Dude, but it was kind of a sleeper and a stinker. I've just not had the proper focus lately.
I thought it was great! I just love all your articles, except the total sports ones. I just watched a History Channel "Modern Marvel" on the great West Point. You should try to catch it, it's really good and made me think of you. Take care. g
Thanks Gin, I"ll check it out. I could write a book on that place and from my perspective now it would be a comedic adventure.
Next article will be on the Aden and Poppy trip to Denver, which is coming up in 2 days.
I made it.
