Just a Wonderful Wolverine and Laker Day ;>)Posted Saturday, August 15, 2009, at 6:35 PM
The old golf bum himself...
Today, I played golf or at least I tried for a while. I first played in the WRV Open this morning, a scramble, so we didn't have to use all of my shots, which is definitely a blessing. I played with Jay Kaho, Tom and Jim Jeffers this morning and although we didn't win, it was one of the highlights of my life. We had some very good times hitting some good and some bad shots, but we talked about some extremely good old times. These guys are really very special to me. When I checked in this morning I saw Joe Huntington taking money at the desk for the tournament and I was totally perplexed. Joe is a Bloomfield guy, a great guy, but I thought what the heck, what is Joe doing working at a WRV tournament? Well dummy me; he's there because his daughter is married to JB Neill. JB is now the WRV Athletic Director and one very, very special person. Sorry Joe, I am getting a little slow nowadays. Good job Ol' Simmons you sure figured that one out quick enough. Good job JB, glad to see you in that position and I wish you the best of everything. If it weren't for Willie McKinley, you wouldn't even be called Ol' Simmons. You can figure that one out for yourself...hey Senor McKinley, my best wishes to you. After the WRV, I was fortunate enough to play in the Jasonville Open with my son, Matthew. That is a treat within itself and I always look forward to those occasions. However, this week was especially a great weekend match because Matthew had lined us up with one of my favorite twosomes, Chris Taylor and Randy Smith, who happen to be two tremendous golfers. Chris won the Greene County Championship this year and Randy has won it about ten times over the past 4 decades (he's really an old guy). Matthew and I have never come close to winning any championship of any kind at any time over the past 4 centuries, but we keep trying. Matt and I are not very good golfers, but we love to play, however we had a golden opportunity to play with two of the very best local players today and I thank him for that invitation. When you get to play along side of good golfers it is always a treat. Today, I not only did that, I played with a couple of very special gentlemen. These guys know that they are so much better than we are and yet they always treat us as though we belong in their company. Thanks to Chris and Randy for your tremendous heart warming hospitality to myself and to my son...it was an afternoon that was very special to me. The Jasonville Open is a wonderful experience for me because I get to see some of my dearest old friends. I saw Charlie Bonham today, a truly wonderful guy. The other day I was giving a presentation at SAIC at West Gate and his daughter was there...my how times have changed. I saw Mark McClanahan, Tom Williams, Brian Miller, Jack Simpson, Gary Shipman, the Wilson brothers and a host of other old J-ville folks who I just don't see very often. That's what makes this tournament so special to me. I hope that in the future that this tournament continues to grow and grow. Thanks to Bart Beard and Brooke French for everything that the two of you have done to keep me entertained every weekend throughout this summer. You would have thought by now that I could play some decent golf, however I have continued to prove that theory incorrect time and time again. Just goes to show all of you that no matter how hard I try, I'm still just the same old golf bum that I've always been. Thanks for that opportunity to fill that position so well. And thanks to all of my friends who have been so patient to play with such a poor old golfing bum throughout all these years...it has been my pleasure. 100 articles is a lot more than I ever thought that I would write. It is probably time to quit, but I'm not going to quit right now...nope, you're stuck with me for little awhile longer.
I'd also like to thank Chris Pruett for giving me the opportunity to fill these pages with such poorly edited drivel for 100 articles. And for those of you who read and comment...you folks are some of my favorite people. Thanks for dropping in... see ya on #101. Congratulations, Simmons, on your 100th blog, and keep them coming, please.
Couldn't agree with you more Simmons. The J-Ville Open is a great time to meet old class mates and enjoy the day regardless of what your final golf score ends up.
Enjoy reading your blogs and seeing you today.
100! We'll call it Volume I.
Sorry I missed it, sounds like it was a great day. Just found out from Jeremy that he won his club championship at Harbor Trees Golf Club this weekend, shooting 71-71-74 to win by 8.
Looking forward to the next 100 articles.
OBTW, I forgot to mention, looks like you've lost weight.
I also congratulate you on your 100th blog & certainly agree with Lil' Hahn - "keep them coming." Looking forward to #101!
Did you win the Jasonville Open?
Congrats Keith! Keep it up, sure enjoy all your blogging. You have a way with words, I feel like you keep me in touch with old friends too.
Keep it up Sims i love to read your blogs even the fiction. I like to forward them to your golfing and pop drinking buddy Shane.
