Will That Be Check or Cash?Posted Thursday, May 6, 2010, at 8:16 AM
A very personal check.
I have always thought that this check writing practice was one of the great things about living in small town USA. People know who you are when you come in, and when you leave, you write them a personal check for goods or services and everyone is happy. However, like most things that I have become accustomed to and have enjoyed; this practice is apparently changing for the worse and may soon become a lost art. Rather than filling out checks by hand now, they just pass them through a high tech check reader and (this is where it gets tricky) somehow this contraption contacts something or...maybe someone...somewhere out in the netherworld or maybe just in a local nether region....I can never seem to get that part straight...and either accepts or denies your check. I am not sure how these contraptions work, but I have found out one thing...some of them don't work very well. A few weeks ago, while paying for gas at Huck's in Bloomfield, my check was denied by the fancy high tech check reader in the store. I hadn't changed checks, changed banks, or changed my address, but my check was denied. Same checks I had always used but for some reason the reader didn't like it, so it was denied. Fortunately for me, a friend of mine who works there, allowed me to fill out my check the old fashioned way, since I had been coming in there for several years and had never written a bad check. For that reason, I will continue to buy my gas at Huck's. Let's have three cheers for small town USA. I have never written a bad check in all of my 56+ years on this fine earth. To me, and I must assume that in the eyes of many people, it is the same thing as stealing from someone and I don't do that either. Last night I picked up some items at a store in my hometown. I have shopped there for several years and almost always have paid with a personal check. I have filled out hundreds of checks over the years at this store and have never been denied...until last night. This store has also installed one of the new high tech check readers. This high tech check reader denied my check and the young lady, who has waited on me numerous times, refused to accept my check. In her defense, she went to the office and talked to someone; however, she came back and said my check was...denied. Fortunately, I had only picked up a few items and had enough cash to cover it. A co-worker from my office was in the check-out line right behind me and witnessed the entire process. I think he was secretly happy with my misfortune because I had beaten him to a certain item and there wasn't enough remaining for him to get his. I promise Lonnie...I will never do that again. I will probably still go to our local store, if I only need an item or two and if I am sure I have enough cash with me before I go in, but I won't be buying the bulk of my groceries there anymore. It is a tad bit embarrassing to be standing there in front of everyone when they tell you that your check has been denied. I harbor no hard feelings toward any of the people who work there, nor towards the management, but I just don't like that feeling of being told that my personal check isn't any good...especially when I know that it is. I never look forward to driving to Linton (to The Phil is OK, but no further), but it looks like I will be stocking up at another store in the future. As of this date, they haven't denied any of my personal checks. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Keith.....I feel your pain about the whole check writing business. I, too, use to write checks for almost everything. I even ONE time had to write a check to our local papergirl who home delivered our evening newspaper. (Which is another thing I miss about the "good ole days"). Anyway....I am now trying to adapt to our changing times and after 56+ years of loving to write checks and fortunately without writing a bad one have given in to technology and started using my debit card from my checking account. It has really made life easier at the check out register.
PS: Don't worry about high-tech machines or ID... your rental check will be accepted!!
I use my check card 98% of the time - of course, I don't live in a small town. But, I've not had a problem with the check card, and it works the same way, saves me the trouble of writing a check.
Keith, I'm with you; especially on that last paragraph.
It's a terrible feeling being in that West Bound lane crossing The River. Well, unless you throw the brakes on at the Locker Plant or Hunters.......
Simmons,
I get your point. You might be a redneck if you still write checks.
Just remember the big chains are not your only option. I believe Angell's is a family run business.
Or come to lyons, the people that run the value mart are good folks.
Sorry to the blog Police. Didn't think what I wrote was vulgar. Have heard George W. say it during his speeches. Will not use this adjective again. I apologize.
i dislike using checks, but i dislike buying them even more. i only use them to pay rent....only 145 more months of rent, until my bank charges me 15$ of my money to use my money.
I know, I know. I have been using checks for years, long before most of you were born, except Wigs. Maybe I'll look into getting a Debit Card. Maybe.
I must also apologize to the blog police and Wigs. Evidently you can not say a store's proper name and make fun of people. Wigs: "Sorry about that look like the hick on the check comment." I still stand by the comment about the good steak at the store there in Linton where the 3D used to be......but does that hat say BubbaGump Shrimp on the front????
In Oracle if you want to pay the light bill by check, write this on a check, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Secretary of the Interior, San Carlos Irrigation Project. Or you can call them, but it goes like this, and the guy talks slow; Please listen carefully, and then he says it is Spanish, and he goes on in English; Our menu has changed in 2004, if you want to pay your bill or have questions push one, for maintenance push two. It kills me they changed the menu six years ago. Ok, if you pay by giving them your debit card number it costs 4 dollars, if you give them your check numbers, routing and account numbers it does not cost any extra. The same thing applies with Qwest, phone, internet, 4 dollars if you use the card, nothing if you give the check numbers. Makes no sense to me at all. Paying the light bill is one I do not mind paying, for some reason, they are a throwback. One day I called and I got a person and I said I would like to pay my bill and they said, well, no one is in right now that takes payments. I said when will they be back and they said I don't know they were supposed to be here at ten but it is one o'clock now, so I do not know. I asked how many there were who took payments and they said three I think. Tight ship.
oracle, it sounds like "Catch 22". I would bet you read that book.
Wigs did you only respond to Oracle because of your triskaidekaphobia?
Lil' Hahn.
I'm weaker than a man should be.
I can't help myself.
