Let's quit bashing our police -- they did a great job nabbing the robbery suspect

Posted Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 8:20 PM

I'm amazed by the level of negativity exhibited by some of our web posters that was directed at local law enforcement officers in the wake of the first armed bank robbery in Linton in more than eight years.

Early Wednesday afternoon, a brazen young man walked into a downtown Linton bank branch carrying a rifle and a backpack. He demanded cash from the MainSource Bank teller. She quickly complied and he walked out of the bank in broad daylight with some ill-gotten cash. The exact amount has not been revealed by police or the bank officials, but that's really not important. The fact remains the bank was robbed at gunpoint -- a serious and dangerous criminal act.

None of the bank employees are customers in the branch during the hold up were hurt.

Within a matter of minutes officers -- both on duty and off-duty -- from the Linton Police Department and Worthington Police Department as well as the Greene County Sheriff's Department and Indiana Conservation Officers were on the scene. Securing the scene, interviewing witnesses and combing the area for the lone male gunman.

The local lawmen got some help from the Indiana State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and made an arrest less than nine hours after the hold up.

The suspect is now behind bars.

Now that's some good professional police work by any standards and we should all be proud of all our law enforcement officers for their efforts.

Some of the comments on the website were down right cruel and ill-informed.

There were comments referring to inappropriate dress by some of the officers. What the posters failed to realize or acknowledge was a good number of these officers were engaged in firearms training at the local FOP when the bank's hold-up alarm came in.

Were the officers supposed to go home and get into their "dress blues"?

No, they did the responsible thing and came quickly to the crime scene and didn't worry about whether they were going to offend the citizen "style police".

They did the job they are trained to do.

My hat is off to the local police for a job well done.

And for those who can belch out nothing but negativity and garbage in your comments, my advice is -- get a life.

I have always been very proud of the LPD for all of their commendable work

I totally agree with Chad Crynes ! I haven't lived in the city of Linton for several years but I read the news everyday and I am very proud to know that the officers are all sons and daughters of people I went to school with ! The officers on the police department would be ridiculed one way or the other! What gets me is how long the prosecutor takes to issue warrants to back up these officers! I have seen in the police logs for example on the Sept.17th,2008 where a bar fight had been turned over to the prosecutor and 5 days later still nothing? That was just an example, so why does the department answer them type of calls if nothing is going to be done about it? I'm sure the Police Department had more important things to do than stop a bar fight but if they hadn't showed up then everybody would be able to say THEY DONT DO THEIR JOB!!!! Keep up the good work because the people degrading you are the ones who someday may have to look you in the eye and say THANK YOU!!

Thanks Nick! Finally someone points out that the negativity of some of the bloggers is truly amazing. I have pointed out before and will say so again, if the people responsible for the negative comments would spend half the time doing something positive as they do complaining we would have a much better community! As far as our law enforcement in our city and community, we could not have asked for a better job. As far as the Worthington cop goes, I think if you remember our city (law enforcement officers included) workers helped out with the Bloomfield tornado/storms as well as the Worthington flooding problems....I think thats what you call team work! It is also what makes our area a great place to live. Thank you to all of you and keep up the great work!

First, I would like to say thank you to Nick and everyone who has shown nothing but support to law enforcement of Greene County. Regardless of what myself or other officer's do, we are not always going to make everyone happy nor is everyone going to agree with how we do things. Whether we do our job in uniform or in plain clothes, the end result is the same. Thanks again Greene County for your support.

That particular Worthington officer works night most of the time, and lives in Switz to boot. Even if he wasn't in Linton at the time, he's pretty close. A final note; if and when I need police assistance, I don't care where they are from, as long as they can get to me or mine, and do the best job they can.

Why whenever a dissenting opinion, regardless of what that sentiment is, does someone say/write: Get a life, such as is written is this fine blog of kudos for Linton's finest? That is one lame insult for anyone!

Eggman, I've noticed the same thing. Those Worthington cops show up for everything. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it seems strange that they are always in another town and seem to be one of the first on the scene.

Maybe the law offenders should re-evaluate which town to do their business in....

Wordmaster, I understand, but my point was that it seems they spend more time outside of Worthington than they do in Worthington.

EggMan:

You missed the point. The Worthington officer was in Linton training and thus he responded to the robbery with the rest of the law enforcement officers.

I applaud the fast work done by the officers, but it seems to me that the Worthington police spend more time responding to calls in other towns than they spend responding to calls in Worthington.

Well said, Nick. The Linton Police Department has a great bunch of officers -- full-time and reserve -- who risk their lives each and every day to protect the citizens of this community. They do an excellent job, and it's a shame there are so many negative comments floating around.

Thanks to the LPD and the other area officers who worked so quickly to apprehend this subject. Greene County is fortunate to have so many great officers to serve its citizens.

Great blog!!

I could care less what the guys were wearing...they did their job, and that is what counts.

I wonder if the ones complaining were in a situation and needed police assistance if they would want the quick response time or if they would rather wait until the officers took time to dress....

Sorry it took us so long sir, we had to go home and get our uniforms on, polish our shoes and clean our firearms....oh the suspect got away, we are sorry for that, but we have to look our best ya know.....

Ditto- Nick

I totally agree with you! Individuals need to look at the situation and think of the appropriate things that should take place. I read comments on this website and I would be ashamed to think others see what has been posted. Individuals are so cruel with their comments.
