Eventful week spurs questions and speculation

Posted Friday, March 11, 2011, at 2:45 PM

An eventful week or so on the local news scene leaves questions unanswered and speculation is running in high gear.

Who will succeed the late Tom Jones to finish out the nine months remaining on his mayoral term in Linton?

Several names have surfaced as possible successors, but those don't need to be named now because that would just stoke more wood on an already burning rumor fire.

A caucus of Democrat Party precinct committeemen, who live within the city limits, will meet some time in the next week or so and make the mayor selection.

In the meantime, Linton City Council President Linda Bedwell is the interim mayor. She can serve for no more than 30 days.

Senior prank at WRV

The senior prank incident at White River Valley High School also has been the subject of plenty talk and second-guessing on how school officials dealt with the situation.

Apparently, what happened was 11 seniors -- boys and girls -- made entry to the school building at about 10 p.m. on a Sunday with the help of a physical education teacher's aid.

No serious damage was done inside the building -- other than some writing with erasable markers on mirrors and windows, some water was placed at strategic locations inside and on top of doorways and some plastic wrap was placed over some commodes -- pretty harmless stuff that would be tabbed as an understandable senior prank.

What would be proper discipline in this case?

I guess the main issue to consider is what was the role of the school employee -- who has been rumored to have provided the kids with a key to enter the building?

If a key was given to the students, that's crossing the line -- especially when you consider the students did breach the security of the building after school hours with the aide's assistance.

Should she be fired? That's not my call, but termination was possibly excessive. A reprimand would maybe have been a better option.

However, seeing it from the school's perspective a clear message has to be sent to other staff that this kind of poor judgment can't be tolerated in the future.

In the big picture of things, I wonder how many other keys are out there in unauthorized hands in this school district and others in the county?

Is Bucher still teaching, coaching?

Is Bloomfield High School boys varsity basketball coach John Bucher still on the job?

Is he still teaching science at the school?

Those are the million dollar questions and school officials continue to be very tight-lipped on what happened and what exactly transpired after last weekend's sectional loss at Eastern Greene High School.

It appears Bucher's problems revolve around things that happened off the basketball court.

School officials are also not talking about what action was taken as far as discipline is concerned.

We do know a team meeting was conducted this week with the school principal and basketball players in which summer workouts and summer camps were discussed.

Bucher was not a part of that meeting.

If you look at Facebook and listen to the "coffee talk" at the Dairy Queen, the variations are many and probably move a distance from the actual truth every time the story is re-told.

We've been promised by Superintendent Dan Sichting that there will be an agenda item dealing with the matter at the March 30 school board meeting.

It might be wise to wait until after that meeting before drawing any conclusions about what did or did not happen.

What happened to Drew and where is the body hidden??

Ok about the WRV prank, It was an innocent senior prank, teachers have been helping students do them for years the class above me did this but they came in and turned everything upside down in all the classrooms and im pretty sure no one got in trouble for that nor did anyone get fired.

I personally hope our School Board Members will see to it that the moral thing is done here, Warn all facilty from this point on if this happens this is what is going to happen to you and your job. Make them aware they will be jeopordizing their position. Had Jeri Sue been aware that her job would have been Jeopordized would she have done whatever her part was???
