The Eastern Greene School Corporation is in a contract with Chartwells School Dining Services. The Food Service Department at Eastern Greene Community Schools is committed to providing nutritionally balanced meals in compliance with the standards set by the USDA and the State of Indiana; However, Eastern Greene has went above and beyond to provide their students with the best dining experience available to them. Last Thursday, students at Eastern Greene High School participated in a Greener Fields Together pilot program with a "Farm to School" event and display table set up during their lunch periods. During the event, local farmer and Eastern Greene alumni David Britton was on site, along with Agriculture instructor and FFA sponsor Shelby (Britton) Hovious to educate Eastern Greene students on local farming and ways they could become involved in Eastern Greene's FFA program. Local produce was also on display from Garwood Orchards and Farm Markets, located in LaPorte, Ind., and WM. R. Harriman Farms in Spencer, Ind. Students were able to sample a variety of recipes made from locally grown produce. Donald Hymer, Directory of Eastern Greene Schools Dining Services, explained that the favorite recipes chosen from students would be incorporated into their daily dining menu at school. The students sampled a kale and apple salad, roasted turnips, roasted sweet cinnamon butternut squash, cilantra lime coleslaw and a cabbage carrot cranberry salad. Apple cider was also served.
