Bays found guilty on drug charges

A Linton man was found guilty in Greene Circuit Court on Monday of possession of more than three grams of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, a class A felony. Jeffrey Scott Bays, 38, will be sentenced for the crime Jan. 17. According to court documents filed on June 7 of this year, Bays had been arrested in May by Linton Police officer Chad Crynes after he and Indiana State Police Trooper Mark Parker and personnel from Community Corrections entered Bays' residence and discovered several drug-related items. ...

Teachers desperately need time to relax and get away from day-to-day classroom schedules, worries about ISTEP scores and the state's financial woes. Shoppers more frugal this year

Local retailers say after a slow start to the Christmas buying season, sales were boosted by last-minute shoppers who waited on the mark-downs. Chris Fritzinger, manager of the Linton Super Wal-Mart, said, "We came out with an increase; however, it was the last-minute shoppers. It all hit the last two days (before Christmas) ... and we ended up with a slight increase (over last year's sales)."...

Man dies at Bloomfield restaurant

Preliminary tests on the body of a 28-year-old man who died Christmas morning at a Bloomfield restaurant indicate that he died of asphyxiation following a holiday celebration. Dead is Bernardo Compos Ortega, who lived on South Washington Street in Bloomfield. Ortega was an employee of the El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant in that town...

Greene County awarded emergency food, shelter program funds

Greene County has been chosen to receive $21,697 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the area. The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and United Way of America, which will provide the administrative staff and function as fiscal agent...
