Stanley Richard (Dick) Vaughn, 75, of Bloomfield, passed away at 12:58 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at Bloomington Hospital. He was born Aug. 28, 1935 in Indianapolis to Norman and Evelyn (Smith) Vaughn. He worked for the Monon Railroad through five mergers and retired from CSX in 1997 after 44 years of service. He joined the first National Guard unit in Linton on May 4, 1953 and served eight years. He was a member of the Worthington Masonic Lodge 577 and the Zorah Shrine in Indianapolis...

Verla M. Brown, 91 of Bloomfield and formerly of Bicknell, passed away at 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at Greene County General Hospital in Linton. Born Jan. 20, 1919 near Odon in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Homer and Ethel (Wolford) Brown...

Eric K. Rose, 36, of Linton, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010 at his residence. He was born on May 28, 1974 in Linton to Julian R. and Fern R. (Donahue) Rose. On April 14, 2001 he married Shannon M. Neal. Eric worked as a laborer with Asplundh Tree Experts. Survivors include his wife, Shannon Rose of Linton; his three children, Maranda, Austin and Jilian, at home; five sisters, Vickey (Chester K.) Edmonson and Patty Caddell, both of Linton, Debra Rose and Rita (Steve) White, both of Lyons, and Gale (Lyle) Fisher of Sparta, Wis.; one brother, Danny (Rebecca L.) Rose of Linton. Eric was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond Rose on March 14, 2002. Visitation hour will be held from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at the Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton. Phyllis E. Pickett, 89, of Carmel, passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2010. Her husband, Albert Pickett, who was Carmel's first mayor, her son, William Joe Pickett, one brother and one sister, preceded her in death. Phyllis was the payroll director for the BMV and was a member of Carmel Friends Church...

Eastern Greene girls run third The Eastern Greene High School girls cross country team placed third at the Jon Mitchell Invitational, hosted by Cascade High School Saturday. Brownsburg won with a total of 46 points. Monrovia was next with 112, just nipping the Lady Thunderbirds by one point for second place...

The White River Valley Lady Wolverines wrapped losses to Eastern Greene and the host Lady Lions around a win over Northeast Dubois at Saturday's Loogootee Invitational volleyball tournament. WRV picked up their sixth win of the year after stopping the Jeeps 25-23, 13-25, 15-12 in their middle match of the day...

The Eastern Greene High School boys cross country team competed in the Jon Mitchell Invitational hosted by Cascade High School Saturday. The Thunderbirds had a total of 123 points, good for fourth place. Brownsburg won with 44 points, Cascade had 104 and Speedway 122. The T-Birds defeated Danville, Mooresville, South Putnam, Decatur Central, Tri-West, Monrovia and Cloverdale...

Shakamak prevailed in one of four matches at the Mooresville volleyball invitational Saturday. The Lady Lakers defeated North Vermillion 25-19, 25-10 and then lost to the host Lady Pioneers 22-25, 11-25; Bethesda 19-25, 7-25; and Western Boone 22-25, 15-25...

After a 33-29 loss to Class 3A West Vigo Friday, Linton-Stockton dropped to No. 5 in the most recent Associated Press Class A football poll. Undefeated Lafayette Central Catholic and Southern Wells remained as the top two teams in Class A. Churubusco, who also has a 4-0 record, moved from fifth to third with the losses by the Miners and North Daviess, who fell to Class 3A Washington 48-7 last week...

"Spice," also known as K2, remains legal in Indiana and the herb is sometimes smoked as a marijuana substitute.
