UPDATED AT 3 P.M.: Power outages reported; service restored to most customers
(Local News ~ 10/26/10)
A strong storm front passing through Greene County very quickly caused scattered power outages and downed trees Tuesday morning. Duke Energy reported more than 40,000 homes and businesses without power at midmorning, mostly in western Indiana, while Indiana Michigan Power and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. also reported scattered outages. At its peak in Greene County, Duke Energy reported 1,522 outages in the Jasonville, Midland and Bloomfield areas at about 10:30 a.m. The Jasonville area had the highest concentration of power outages with up to 1,000 customers without electricity. By noon, the outages had dropped to just 52 customers, Duke officials reported. The Greene County Emergency Management Agency activated its emergency operations center at 8:55 a.m., according to EMA director Roger Axe. "We've taken some precautions and notified some more people and we've gone to an increased readiness status," Axe said. "We'll probably stand down when this blows over." The storm sirens were activated in the town of Bloomfield at 9:19 a.m, according to a dispatcher at the Greene County Sheriff's Department who reported a variety of calls concerning downed trees and power lines. Bloomfield School District moved students in to the hallways at about 9:27 a.m. as a precaution, Axe reported. "This has pretty well blown over. By 10:30 a.m. it was pretty well gone," Axe added. Shane Smith, operations manager for Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC, reported about 500 outages at about 10:45 a.m. "They are scattered pretty well over the entire (UDWI) system," Smith said. "I know we had some transmission events from our power supplier this morning and it blinked everybody around the Switz City area and in the Odon area. We are just seeing a lot of scattered outages." Smith said most of the outages were caused by limbs dropping down on electrical transmission lines. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for parts of western and central Indiana, including parts of southern and eastern Greene County, but there were no immediate reports of extensive storm damage or touchdowns. Also on Tuesday, the NWS issued high wind advisory for Greene and Sullivan counties lasting from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sustained south to southwest winds over 30 mph were predicted with gusts around 50 mph possible. Eleven states were under a high wind warning Tuesday, including Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Ohio and parts of Kentucky. Elsewhere around the state, Indianapolis Power & Light had nearly 16,000 in the dark. Indiana Michigan Power and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. reported scattered outages. The Indiana Toll Road across the state's northern tier temporarily banned long double trailers and triple trailers because of high winds Tuesday morning. Indianapolis International Airport reported some flight delays, particularly to other Midwestern destinations. The National Weather Service says a trained spotter reported a tornado in a rural area east of Kokomo damaged some houses and a shed. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
