With the current and forecasted weather predictions, the Linton Police Department and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) are advising locals to be prepared for power outages. The LPD is encouraging area residents to have an alternate heat source in case of a power outage -- that could result from an accumulation of freezing rain and sleet that is currently being predicted...

It will be senior night for the Eastern Greene girls basketball team Thursday when they host North Daviess in a varsity-only game. The senior night festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the game to follow at 7 p.m.

Raymond Steele, 88, of Indianapolis and formerly of Linton and Jasonville, passed away on Monday morning, Jan. 31, 2011, at Robin Run Health Care Facility in Indianapolis. He was born Sept. 6, 1922, in Gilmore, the son of Claude and Alpha (Payton) Steele...

Lakers snap five-game losing streak The Shakamak Lakers snapped a five-game losing streak at the expense of Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference rival North Central Saturday night at Farmersburg. The Greene County Sheriff's Department is investigating a single-vehicle wreck that happened about three miles west of Linton -- just off of State Road 54. The 2002 Nissan Sentra, registered to Christina Vestal of Midland, was apparently heading southbound and crossed over the center line and left the east side of the road and went down in a small ravine -- striking several small trees, according to GCSD Terry Wade. The wreck was reported about 7:34 a.m. on Monday. It is unknown when the wreck happened. "We don't know who the driver is. The driver was gone from the scene when the first responding emergency personnel arrived," Wade told the Greene County Daily World. "We don't have any driver at this time ... obviously it's unknown at this time what the cause of the accident was. It's unknown if there were any injures and unknown how many occupants would have been in the vehicle." Also responding to the scene were personnel from the Linton Police Department, Linton Fire Department, and Greene County Ambulance Service.

All of the local sports events for Monday were postponed, including the Union (Dugger) at Eastern Greene High School boys basketball game and the North Central at Linton-Stockton, Bloomfield at Owen Valley and Medora at Union (Dugger) girls basketball games...

VERNE -- Blake Eaton scored only six points for the Linton-Stockton Miners in Saturday's 56-53 overtime win at South Knox Saturday night. But according to the 6-3 junior center, the last three were the most memorable this season. "It was probably the most exciting play I've had my whole life, time just slowed down," Eaton said as he sat by himself in the visiting lockerroom at the southern Knox County school. "I saw A.K. (Austin Karazsia) drive and as soon as I saw him look at me, time stopped."...

A 42-year-old Owensburg man is being charged with intimidation for allegedly waving a loaded gun around while arguing with his wife. He also allegedly made a threat to shoot her that led a 12-year-old child to call 911 for help. James R. Alvarez is facing one count of intimidation as a class C felony and is scheduled to appear for his initial hearing in Greene Circuit Court on Wednesday...

More and more people sign up for Facebook every day and it's become a great way to get in touch with old friends and keep up with what's going on with people both near and far away. But despite all the advantages of participating in the Facebook community, law enforcement officers in Linton say it has also created some new problems they had not run into before the era of Facebook and other social networks...

Firearm safety kits are currently being distributed free of charge at the Greene County Sheriff's Department. The department has 200 kits that will be given away to county residents on a first-come, first-serve basis, explained a spokesperson at the county law enforcement department...

The Greene County Council says it doesn't want to pay a disputed bill with the Indianapolis firm that annually helps the county formulate its budget. Coonrod and Associates has been helping the county auditor's office prepare the budget for a number of years, but the consensus of the council Monday was that the arrangement should end...
