Benefit on Saturday to help Dugger woman with breast cancer
(Local News ~ 05/17/11)
Food, entertainment and prizes will be available at a cancer benefit Saturday starting at 1 p.m. on Main Street in Dugger. The event will be conducted to raise money for the medical expenses for Chrystal Salesman. Salesman was diagnosed with a rare circulatory disease, Buerger's Disease, in 2000. She was finally free of that disease seven months ago, only to be diagnosed in April with breast cancer. The breast cancer has spread into her lymph system. She underwent a radical mastectomy April 15, and a week later she received another diagnosis of cervical cancer and underwent a hysterectomy on May 4. Lesa Lewellyn, chairperson of the event, spoke very highly about Salesman. Although Lewellyn has only known Salesman for about a year, what drew her to help the woman was, "the spirit in her eyes, her determination, and her story." Over the course of 10 years, Salesman underwent 19 surgeries. As she battled each hardship of the disease, she was still strong enough to be a large part of her daughter's life. Only four days after her hysterectomy she was coaching third base for her daughter's softball team. "The most important thing is that after that, she was out there coaching her daughter's softball team ... that just shows what kind of person she is," Lewellyn said. Diane Brown met Salesman 11 years ago when she was in the hospital with the circulatory disease. Brown was her nurse, and at that time she described Salesman's attitude as bitter. Although, over time she realized that was not the best way to handle the situation. "She has the best attitude that I have ever seen with someone going through all of this," Brown said of Salesman. She described Salesman as upbeat, motivated, and determined. Brown said that Salesman is a fun, joking person, and once she gets to know you, she is a committed friend for life. "(Salesman's attitude) is pretty good. She is pretty upbeat about it. She is better than what most would be, I think," Salesman's aunt, Rose Blanton said. She added that she, too, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and her niece has been her support system. Blanton pointed out that after the mastectomy, she feared that Salesman would regress, but she stayed strong and kept life normal for her daughter. "The medical expenses far exceed the limited insurance coverage available to Chrystal," the flyer for the benefit states. Raffle tickets can be purchased before the event by calling (812) 648-9005. The price for tickets are $1 each, or six for $5. There will also be a bucket drawing at the event. In this raffle, you can place your raffle ticket in the bucket of the prize you choose. "We have too many (prizes) to mention," Lewellyn explained. "The raffle grand prize is a handmade willow porch bench, valued at over $500. Just a few of the bucket raffle prizes include a $150 professional photo session, a collector handmade doll valued at $150, breast cancer awareness cornhole game set, a golf bag, fishing gear, two months free trash collection service and many, many more," Lewellyn said. Other entertainment will be available as well, provided by DJ Weezerd. Local band, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, will be performing. Also, special guest, The Unknown Comic, will be at the event. Children will enjoy having a reason to play games in the streets. One block of Main Street will be closed off and activities, such as the cornhole game "Tossing for TA-TA's," kids fair, and a dunk booth from 1 to 8 p.m. If it should rain, all activities will be moved inside the firehouse. The flyer also advertises a "buffet style hog roast with all the trimmings" that will cost $6 per plate, with carryout available from 1 to 6 p.m. Donations can be sent to Chrystal Salesman Cancer Benefit, 1st Financial Bank, 8100 E. Main Street, Dugger, Ind. You can also read more about Chrystal's story at chrystalsalesman.blogspot.com, and also make donations via PayPal. The flyer for the benefit encourages that everyone "spread the word and let's do all we can to support our own!"
