Storms bringing winds of more than 60 mph blew through Greene County shortly after 4 p.m. Monday, but did no major damage. Dispatchers from the Greene County Sheriff's Department reported trees downed. A few roads temporarily flooded as rains fell faster than drains could accomodate. Elizabeth A. "Betty" Berns, 72, of Prairie du Chien, WI passed away Monday, May 23, 2011 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born February 23, 1939 in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Edward and Ludmilla (Balk) Fritsche. Betty was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Prairie du Chien. She married Norman Berns on Sept. 7, 1960 at St. Gabriel's Church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1996. She worked at Grelle's Department Store and later for Wall Street both in Prairie du Chien. She was an active member of St. Gabriel's Parish. She is survived by her sons; Rodney (Shari) Berns of Eagle River, AK and Bart (Lisa) Berns of Linton, IN, a brother, Edward (Patricia) Fritsche of Soledad, CA, sisters, Rose (Gerald) Wright, Anna (John) Rink and Mary Frydenlund all of Prairie du Chien, Thersea (Charles) Morel of Muscoda, WI and Margaret (James) Baldukas of Trotwood, OH, grandchildren, Audrey, Nicholas, Matthew, Ryan and Morgan, great grandchildren, Emily, Evelyn and Benjamin, sister in law Karen Fritsche of Prairie du Chien, an aunt Mae Balk along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers, Charles, Robert and William Fritsche along with a brother in law Art Frydenlund. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. James Weighner officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 25, from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
