(UPDATED AT 10:25 P.M.) Bad weather strikes area
(Local News ~ 05/25/11)
At presstime Wednesday night a string of severe weather had wrought havoc across the area with sirens sounding in Greene County as the area remained under one of several tornado warnings issued. Winds at speeds up to 80 mph were reported in Terre Haute, with significant rainfall and temperature drops, some as extensive as 20 degrees in a matter of minutes, through the area. By 9:35 p.m. winds had picked up in Linton as much of Greene County remained under a tornado warning. Sirens were sounding and storms which hit Sullivan County hard were headed here as well as Washington and Vincennes. Officials report power lines were down in Jasonville, and as many as 11,000 are without power in Terre Haute, fully a quarter of the city's population at presstime. According to reports at 10:20 p.m., trees were reported down around Eastern Greene schools and power was out in parts of the eastern Greene area. However, as the storm waned around 10 p.m, heavy rains continued to fall on Greene County. "There's just a lot of rain and strong winds in Bloomfield," said Season Weddle. Tornadoes decimated some homes east of Bedford near Shawswick according to the Associated Press and Bedford Times-Mail. The tornado struck about 8 p.m. along U.S. 50, about nine miles east of the city. "Everything's under control," Lawrence County Deputy Del Tackett told the AP. "A small pass overturned cars and leveled some houses. No fatalities have been reported." The tornado injured at least a dozen as storms struck the area Wednesday evening, authorities said. At 10 p.m., all injuries appeared minor and not life threatening, according to the Indiana State Police. The full extent of damage and injuries was not known at presstime, however. Extensive damage, injuries and flattened homes in Lawrence County were reported, with Indianapolis and Columbus also struck by strong winds and potential twisters. At presstime, Lawrence County officials were requesting as "much help as possible" from surrounding counties. Sixteen state troopers were in the area, searching for the injured with local rescue teams. However, many local emergency agencies were busy locally as storms and wind battered the area. What was believed to be a tornado was also reported north of Bloomfield near Freedom at 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday. However, that report was not confirmed. Highland Township and Worthington Fire Departments reported no damage as of 9:45 p.m. By 9:20 p.m. the warning, in place over northern Greene and eastern Monroe, had been canceled by the National Weather Service. Moments later, a new warning for western Greene and Sullivan County was issued, as a fresh wave of storms passed through the area. Sirens sounded intermittently through the night, sending area residents to shelter. The storms stretched across the state, and a truck driver near the southern state line called to report deliveries would be delayed to the Greene County Daily World as their semi was rocked by strong winds. Significant damage was caused to the city of Sullivan, said mayoral candidate Clint Lamb, who drove out to check damage Wednesday evening. "I just drove past four broken-in-half light poles and wires and poles leaning sideways," he posted on Facebook. "Bad storm." In Shelburn, residents took cover in the town's fire department. A tree near Bloomington's Crane NSC gate was downed, and hail the size of golf balls battered Owensburg as the area endured the third straight night of strong storms. Hail also battered homes and cars in Monroe County. "It went north through Ellettsville and clobbered my sister's car with hail. It now resembles a golfball with all its dimples," said Don Cranfill. Center Township Police Chief Amy Wilson said the hail inflicted serious damage to homes and cars around the city, including hers. "Here in Owensburg, we were hit hard," she said. "The hail damage has been severe. I took pictures of hail that was bigger than a golf ball." Falling hail damaged her home and cars, along with other residences along State Road 58. "We've had some major hail damage, holes in siding, holes in roofs, and severe damage to vehicles," she said. While Wilson was receiving reports of storm damage with entrapment and requests for assistance from Knox County, she said she couldn't currently spare help. At 9 p.m., police dispatcher Harry Hovey said no requests for aid had been made to Linton. "Nobody's calling us for assistance with their problems," Hovey said. "Nothing close has been hit that bad so far." Meanwhile, other area residents, exasperated with the third straight evening of storms which followed sunny days, expressed their irritation. "I'm in the bathroom in my house in Hashtown," said Angela Gonzalez Hunter. "Enough of this."
