UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Greene County veterans remembered in ceremony on courthouse lawn
(Local News ~ 11/11/11)
Greene County residents paused on the northwest side of the courthouse lawn Friday to remember, honor and pray for veterans -- past and present. It was the annual day of remembrance conducted at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month. It was day of thanksgiving for service to country by local military veterans under bright sunshine and blue sky on a crisp autumn morning in Bloomfield. In the words of the Rev. John Preston, of Bethel Community Church who gave the opening prayer, "We thank you for raising up brave men and women to protect from all of our enemies - foreign and domestic. We pray for their safety in everything they do. We thank you for all those who have gone before who leave this generation a much brighter future. Thanks for every man and woman who has served in the U.S. Armed forces." U.S. Navy ITC Greg Laskowski, assigned at NSWC Crane, was the keynote speaker for the traditional Veteran's Day program sponsored by the Greene County Veteran's Council. The Michigan native and veteran of a tour of duty in Afghanistan told the gathering, "We have many soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines buried all over the world and at the bottom of every ocean. We also have them buried closer to us in towns around us in which they are born. We can see that today in every cemetery around Greene County. We owe these sailors, soldiers, Marines and airmen a debt. That's a debt we can never repay." He continued, "All we can do is remember them and what they did and why they were brave for us. All we can do is to strive to see that other young men and women never have to join them. Today, as never before, we must pledge to remember the things that will bring peace into the world. Today as never before we must pray for God's help in broadening and deepening the peace that we enjoy. Let's pray for freedom and justice and a more stable world." Laskowski said it's important not to forget the veterans who have returned from war's battlefields. "They may be in our workplace or they may be standing on the corner asking for help. We must not forget them. Today, there are approximately 22 million veterans in our great country," he said. "Our veterans sacrificed for us. Now we need to help our veterans ... our veterans served us by ensuring that our freedom was protected now it's our turn to look out for them." The Bloomfield Junior-Senior High School's Center Stage choral group provided choral music for the program. The entire unit of the Bloomfield Junior-Senior Naval Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps (NJROTC), which marched along West Spring Street from the high school to the courthouse square, carried out honor guard duties. Members of the Post No. 1996 American Legion Riders gave a 21-gun salute to the veterans and Al Olson, a member of Solsbery Post 450 Sons of the American Legion (SOL) Post played "Taps" in tribute to the fallen veterans.
