First snow of season causes road problems
(Local News ~ 12/27/11)
The winter's first measurable snow Tuesday morning played havoc with drivers and kept the Greene County Sheriff's Department swamped with more than two dozen wreck calls before noon. Most of the wrecks -- at least 20 -- were reported in the eastern portion of the county, according to Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce. The sheriff reported about a half-dozen in the western part of the county. He also said ice on the roadways was melting, especially in western Greene County. None of the wrecks were serious, most were slide-offs, Pierce said. He estimated about an inch of snow had accumulated east of the White River by midday. There have been no road closings, but several roadways on State Roads 45, 54, 58 and U.S. 231 have been temporally closed to allow wreckers access to ditched vehicles. Pierce's advice to motorists is simple. "They (the roads) are slick and hazardous. ... About every 10 minutes we're having slide-offs reported. This is very typical for a first snow," Pierce said, "Don't get out on these roads unless you have too and if you have too, be aware of the fact the roads are not the same when we get this snow. They are different. The roads are not like traveling on dry pavement and they (motorists) need to be aware of that and slow down." Forecasts from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis show this snow will be short-lived. Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 37, with a west wind between 5 and 8 mph with a low around 28. Thursday is predicted to be mostly sunny, with a high near 46 and very windy with south southwest wind between 9 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
