UPDATED: Man shot in what is believed to be a mid-morning domestic dispute in Lyons
(Local News ~ 06/29/12)
LYONS -- Indiana State Police detectives are investigating a mid-morning Friday shooting in Lyons that has sent a man to an Indianapolis hospital by medical helicopter. The shooting victim, Jesse George, was transported by Air-Evac to IU Health Methodist Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. No condition report was immediately available. The approximate 10:15 a.m. shooting took place on Bogard Street at the home of the alleged shooter, Janice Cross, no age available, according to Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce. The victim then allegedly walked across the street to his mobile home at 230 Bogard Street, where police and medical personnel were summoned. Cross was held up in her home for more than 30 minutes, while armed police officers closed the streets bounding the residences and waited. Cross came out of the frame house after Greene County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Major Mike Hasler requested over a loudspeaker -- in his police SUV -- that she do so. A short time later, she walked toward police without incident. Cross conferred with Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce, Hasler, GCSD Deputy Karen Oliphant, and ISP Trooper Eric Nash while the officers waited for ISP detectives to arrive on the crime scene. Details about how the incident started are sketchy, but it is believed a domestic dispute developed and the shooting followed, according to police reports from the scene. Sheriff Pierce pointed out that there were several gunshots into a side window of the Cross residence. Sheriff Pierce and Trooper Nash both said they were familiar with the couple and units from their respective departments had investigated past incidents at the residences of Cross and George -- who Pearce described as in a relationship. "We are familiar with them," Sheriff Pierce stated. A woman sitting on her porch described the neighborhood as peaceful and a place you would not expect to have a shooting. However, the same woman did say that police officers have been at both the Cross and George residences in the past to investigate domestic disturbances. Cross has not been charged in connection with the shooting pending further investigation. Assisting ISP at the scene were personnel from the Greene County Sheriff's Department and the Lyons Police Department.
