Relay for Life kickoff event scheduled for Saturday in Switz City
(Local News ~ 01/23/13)
Greene County Relay for Life organizers are inviting anyone interested in taking part in this year's event to a kickoff event Saturday at 10 a.m. Representatives and volunteers will be at the Switz City Christian Church, located along State Road 54, to launch fundraising efforts for the upcoming Relay for Life. Relay for Life event co-chairperson Halea Franklin said the 24-hour event is scheduled to begin May 18 in the White River Valley High School gym, and continue until 10 a.m. on May 19. The kickoff event is not required to participate in the Greene County Relay for Life, but it can be educational to learn where to start with fundraising options. "We'll discuss several things, including team captain duties, upcoming fundraisers, goals for the event, details for the event, and more," Franklin noted. The event will also educate participants on the importance of the American Cancer Society and what the organization does for those who are battling cancer. The kick will give organizers an idea of the number of people and teams interested in the Greene County Relay for Life. Approximately 200 participants helped raise $56,476 for the 2012 Relay for Life event, and organizers hope to bring in more support and raise $59,000 for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. Last year's goal was $66,000, but representatives explained the goal had been set higher to help push volunteers to raise as many funds as possible. The Greene County Relay for Life consists of teams interested in helping with the fight against cancer. Teams can consist of family members, friends or co-workers. Together the teams work to raise money, and the day of the Relay, at least one team member will be walking around the WRV gym to help raise awareness during the 24-hour time period. Local cancer survivors will be present to take a victory lap, along with their caregivers. There will be a Luminaria Ceremony to recognize those who are fighting cancer, or who have lost the battle. The event will also host a Fight Back Ceremony, where participants will have the opportunity to tell what they will do to help fight against cancer. Those who would like to participate in the Greene County Relay for Life, but cannot make it to the meeting, can visit www.relayforlife.org/greenecountyin or contact American Cancer Society Community Representative Debra Smith at 1-800-227-2345.
