Bradbury, Woodward helped guide seniors
(Local News ~ 03/20/13)
The 2012-13 Linton-Stockton High School basketball team features seven seniors -- Cody Kocher, Cole Riggleman, Keith Fulk, Austin Karazsia, Dess Fougerousse, Jackson Bohnert, and Sam Dyar. Most of them were coached in biddy basketball by Derek Bradbury and Darren Woodward. "I knew that a lot of other programs were working with their young players in biddy ball and we weren't," said Woodward. "And it was driving me crazy that we weren't doing it. "My wife told me in a nice way 'Maybe I should get off of the couch and do something about it and get started.' I talked with Derek and we took a lot of our seniors now and started traveling and playing ball." He said he could see potential back then. "You could see at an early age that there was talent," said Woodward. Bradbury knew the key was starting early. "We knew that in order to do this we needed to start the kids off early," said Bradbury. "The kids started playing in tournaments and we have gotten to this moment tonight (semistate championship and spot in Saturday's Class 2A state championship game against Bowman Academy at 12:45 p.m. in Bankers Life Fieldhouse at Indianapolis). Bradbury said Karazsia, Fulk, and Bohnert, along with Ryan Woodward (a junior) and Bryant Jackson (also a junior), played travel ball together throughout the grades, and Riggleman and Kocher participated but did not play travel ball all the time. "Dess moved over and started playing in the eighth grade," said Bradbury. "These kids have worked very hard and it is great to see it pay off for them." Karazsia, who is second on the Miner all-time scoring list, said he remembers those early days. "It all started for us back with Derek Bradbury and Darren Woodward coaching us back in third grade," said Karazsia, who poured in 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 76-75 overtime victory over Speedway in the Class 2A semistate championship game March 16 at Richmond. "We had a lot of fun back then learning how to play the game." Woodward said it all started with the basics. "We were just trying to work on fundamentals," he said. "Then they got to high school and got to work with coach (Joey) Hart. "You could see that they were getting better year by year. It has been very rewarding to watch how they have come together this year as seniors." In the victory over Speedway, Woodward said they performed like they have all season, compiling a 24-3 record and No. 10 ranking. "They beat a heck of a team tonight," Woodward said after holding off Speedway for the school's first semistate championship in basketball. "They just won't quit. "They had to come back to beat Sullivan. They got down early against Clarksville and held them off at the end. They really responded in the final two minutes to beat Perry Central in the regional championship and tonight they made all the big plays and big free throws to win Linton's first semistate. When they are down, they just keep coming back." Bradbury said it has been a process. "This group didn't win a tournament until the sixth grade," said Bradbury. "They went undefeated in the seventh grade and lost just one game, to Loogootee as eighth graders, I believe. "That's where it took off -- junior high. When it finally got going, it has paid big dividends. This group has done what no other bunch of boys at Linton has ever done. AK and Dess were unbelievable tonight. Bohnert did a great job on the boards. This was just a good team effort. This was a really special group of kids that came out with a really special win tonight." Bradbury added they have exceeded expectations. "I think this is more than anybody ever thought possible," he said. "They are just one win from a state championship."
