UPDATED: Post-parade awards honors Hall of Fame inductee and basketball team parade marshals
(Local News ~ 07/04/13)
Fran Abbott is the newest inductee to the Linton Hall of Fame. Her enshrinement was made official Thursday at a luncheon gathering in Humphreys Park following the annual Linton Freedom Festival Parade Abbott has retired from her full-time duties as the secretary for Linton Mayor John Wilkes. She served three other mayors -- the late Jimmie K. Wright, the late Tom Jones, and Patti Jones -- for a total of 22 years. Dave Reinhard recapped some of Abbott's career in Linton during an introduction. The award was presented by Linton-Chamber of Commerce President Emeritus and Abbott's "old boss," Mayor Wilkes. Abbott came to Linton from Illinois in 1973 with her husband, the late Jack Abbott, when he was transferred to town to work for a coal company Fran began working at the elementary school as a secretary for two years, then spent time at the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce as executive assistant. After a decade at the Chamber office, late mayor Jimmie K. Wright asked her to work in his office and that began a 22-year career of being the secretary for the mayors. Abbott is still working a couple days a week helping the transition before she goes into full retirement. Abbott said she was humbled by the honor and noted, "I appreciate everyone thinking of me. I don't do it for the glory. I just do because I like to help people. I've always liked to help people. Linton is my home and I like Linton. It's a good community. I've enjoyed everyone that I've worked for. It's been a great experience." Fran said she doesn't have any grand plans for her retirement years yet. "I don't know what I'll do," she added with a beaming smile. In addition, the Linton-Stockton Miners boys basketball team was honored as parade marshals and presented a trophy that will be displayed in the high school in recognition for their remarkable tournament run. The Miners won the Greene County Invitational, the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference title, as well as Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 2A sectional, regional, and semistate crowns. The team shocked the community when it defeated Perry Central in March during the regional title game -- the first time an LSHS team had won a regional since 1946. The Miners defeated Speedway in the semistate. Linton fell to Bowman Academy in the state championship game in Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, 86-73. Chris Pruett, senior general manager and editor of the Greene County Daily World, talked to the gathering about how this team won the hearts and backing of many fans in the community. He pointed out that as far back as the team's eighth-grade year, this team was regarded as one that had the potential to do great things. Pruett stressed that good teams are made up of good players who work hard during the off-season summer months. This team proved that hard work pays dividends. Coach Joey Hart thanked the Chamber for the trophy, the fans for their support and backing and his players for working hard to accomplish many good things on the court this season. Hart admitted, "Once we started to play as a team, we were pretty good." The team finished with a 24-4 record.
