Dugger youngster headed to the Big Apple thanks to Make-A-Wish Foundation
(Local News ~ 07/24/13)
DUGGER -- Wearing a blue and red-colored St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, 8-year-old Cameron Ellis was beaming with a smile when the shiny black limousine wheeled into the driveway of his Dugger home Tuesday afternoon. Cameron stood beside the nearly new glowing stretch Lincoln limo and said, "Wow, that (limo) is sure long." It was the first limo ride for Cameron, his mother and father -- Greg and Kathy Ellis -- and three big sisters -- McKayla, Gracie, and Madison. The Ellis family was picked up by Carey Chauffeured Services for a trip to Indianapolis for an overnight stay before beginning a Make-A-Wish journey to the Big Apple. The family was very gitty with excitement as chauffeur Aaron Koenig welcomed them and helped them load luggage and get situated in the eight-passenger limo. On Wednesday morning the Ellis family boarded a jet -- also a first for the family -- and flew into New York City for a four-day, all-expenses-paid vacation made possible by the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Cameron suffers from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many immature lymphocytes -- a type of white blood cell. He was first diagnosed two years ago and has been through several rounds of chemotherapy treatment at IU Health Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children. In a child with ALL, too many stem cells become cancer (leukemia) cells. The leukemia cells do not work like normal lymphocytes and are not able to fight infection very well. Also, as the number of leukemia cells increases in the blood and bone marrow, there is less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This may lead to infection, anemia, and easy bleeding, according to information from the National Cancer Institute. Kathy Ellis says her son is a tough little trooper when it comes to his treatments. Cameron started treatments as soon as he was diagnosed, which included weekly infusions and at times three-day stays in the hospital were required. "He's in remission now. He's been doing very well. He's never asked why this has happened to him or he never cries when he's getting his (infusion) port put in. He's a tough little boy," Cameron's mother said. Cameron, who enjoys drawing, loves Marvel Comics' superheroes and has miniature replicas of most of the popular ones, according to his mother. Cameron requested a Super Hero wish. The family first met with Make-A-Wish officials about two years ago and then last year reconnected with them and expressed a desire to go visit the Marvel Comics Studios in New York City where the super heroes are created. The wish was granted and Cameron will get to see Marvel Entertainment Studios on West 50th Street in New York City where the characters he loves come alive -- characters like Thor, Spiderman, Captain Marvel, Dr. Doom, Hulk, Iron Man and Daredevil. Marvel Entertainment, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, has a library of more than 8,000 characters featured in a variety of media for more than 70 years. Cameron and family will also visit the Statue of Liberty, the Central Park Zoo, Times Square and other New York City sights. "I think it's going to be fun for everyone," Kathy Ellis said this week as she was preparing for the trip. "It will be a nice break." The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy, according to its mission statement. Make-A-Wish, founded in 1983, granted 14,000 wishes last year to children who had not reached the age of 2 1/2 and were under the age of 18 and had not received a wish from another wish-granting organization. Cameron's mother said the family has adapted to changes caused by her son's illness. Sisters McKayla (15), Gracie (13) and Madison (11) have pitched in and helped where they could to assist with Cameron's illness and show him sincere sibling love, according to their mother. "It was hard at first. We had to leave the girls a lot to go up to Indianapolis at Riley for his treatments, especially in the beginning," she said. Kathy Ellis said the Dugger community and their church family at Hickory United Methodist Church, headed by Pastor Ralph Roach, of rural Linton, have been very supportive and encouraging through the ordeal. Her Christian faith has been increased by what she's seen from and received from her friends and family. "For me, being able to talk to them has been a big help to me," she said. "Our whole town has helped us. You can call anybody in town and say 'Hey, I need help' and they'll be right there to help you." Kathy added, "There's been a lot of prayers for us (the family) and Cameron. We appreciate it."
