Greene County youth assure us a beautiful future

Greene County is a very giving, loving and supportive place. People here come together to support others in a myriad of ways, like gatherings held to raise funds and provide comfort to the family of Madi Moore and the many prayer circles organized to ask God to give Madi and her family strength, the yearly fish fry fundraiser held by the Knights of Columbus held to benefit several local groups such as Greene County Special Olympics, the annual Civitan toy giveaway and free community dinner by the Linton Community Group at Saron Church and the decision by Mutual Bank of Bloomfield to forego giving trinkets away during the Bloomfield Apple Festival, instead using the money they would have spent on said trinkets to give donations to the top three county nonprofits garnering the most votes by visitors to the bank’s Apple Festival booth.. ...

Shafford gets 1,000th point; Lady Miners earn lopsided win

Vanessa Shafford scored her 1,000th career point in the second quarter of a lopsided 93-28 win over SWIAC rival Shakamak. Shafford finished with a game high 24 points. “I’m very proud of her. I am excited for her now and for her future,” Coach Jared Rehmel said about his star junior. Coach Rehmel continued his praise of her saying, “She’s one of the best kids, students or athletes I have ever been around, at any level. Her teammates’ reaction to her 1,000th point show that.”...

Local hero receives lost honors for military service

After nearly 50 years of wait, Lyons resident Senior Chief Petty Officer Doug Sloan received Naval honors for his service during the Vietnam War. On Tuesday, Dec. 17 American Legion Post 479 of Lyons and Jan Schuler-Hicks, the Regional Director from Senator Mike Braun’s office, presented SCPO Sloan with a Vietnam Service Medal, as well as four Bronze Star Appurtenances for meritorious service in the Navy...
