Former Indiana State Rep. Donald W. Dean, 85, of Bloomfield, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at his residence.
Dean served in the Indiana General Assembly for six terms -- 1978 to 1990. He was also active in the Greene County Republican Party for many years.
He was born April 1, 1922 in Bloomfield, the son of Frank C. and Betty Jeanette (Wines) Dean.
Upon graduation from Bloomfield High School in 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for four years, six months, and 26 days as a technical sergeant in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy during WWII. He served under General George Patton in Tunisia and General Mark Clark in Sicily and Italy. After earning six medal stars for dedicated service to his country, he returned home to Bloomfield where he married Betty Jo (Hasler) Dean.
They had a daughter Nancy (Dean) Canty who is married to Michael Canty and a son David Dean who is married to Shannon (Edwards) Dean.
He is also survived by two grandsons Adam and Ethan Dean.
He was a member of the Bloomfield First Baptist Church for 72 years. After 24 years, he retired from NSWC Crane. He was a life member of the Bloomfield American Legion Post No.196, D.A.V., Bloomfield Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 84, as well as the Scottish Rite and Zorah Temple of Terre Haute, Linton Elks Lodge, Greene County Shrine, and a 50-year member of the Bloomfield Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Nancy Ellen Dean, all of Bloomfield.
Viewing will be at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. at the Bloomfield First Baptist Church on Friday. Viewing will also be before the service at the church from noon until 1 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomfield First Baptist Church Building Fund.
