James C. Mitten, 84, of Canyon Lake, Calif., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007.
Born in Duluth, Minn., on Aug. 5, 1923, he grew up in Linton where he enjoyed his favorite pastime, fishing, and was involved in the Boy Scouts of America and became an Eagle Scout. He served as a Merchant Seaman during World War II, graduated from Rose Hulman Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute and was an engineer for 25 years prior to attaining his law degree and practicing in Hemet for 27 years.
He was a member of the Rotary Club for many years and served on the board of the YMCA. He also was the founder of Valley Wide Recreation & Parks District. After moving to Canyon Lake in 1998, he served on the Watershed Committee and more recently on the Architectural Control Committee.
He is survived by his wife Sarah (Sally) Mitten, his children, Layne Fish, Scott Douglas Mitten, Charles Curtis Mitten and Chelsea E. Mitten; his step-children Clelland J. Ward Jr., Gregory R. Ward, and Kimberly Ward Francescon; 10 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Miller-Jones Mortuary, 26770 Murrieta Rd. in Sun City, with a luncheon reception immediately following the service.
