Doloess Marshall Gummel, 93, of Springfield, Ohio and formerly of Bloomfield, passed away Thurday, Oct. 26, 2006 in Community Hospital.

She was born in Odon, on June 28, 1913, the fourth of 10 children born to Henry Odes and Grace (Holt) Marshall.

She was a graduate of Indianapolis City Hospital (now Wishard Memorial Hospital) School of Nursing in 1935. In 1940, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from The Ohio State University. She returned to Indianapolis City Hospital as a nursing instructor from 1941 through 1947. She also served as secretary to the Indiana State League of Nursing Education.

In January 1948, she was married to Kenneth Gummel.

She returned to nursing service in 1967 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, MD as an instructor in the LPN program.

She wsa later employed as Director of Nursing Service at Sunnyview Home in Butler, PA for 13 years. She also taught adult bible classes for many years. She moved from Bloomfield to Springfield, Ohio in 2002 and was a member of Southgate Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, John F. Gummel of Dayton, OH, James R. Gummel and his wife Darla of Memphis, TN and Joseph E. and his wife Jan of Springfield, OH; a sister, Charlotte Humerickhouse of Bloomfield; four grandsons, Daniel, David, Jonathan, and Joshua Gummel, all of Springfield; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, H. Kenneth Gummel in 1976; three sisters, Vonda Rhodes, Hazel Tarvin and Betty Smith; and five brothers, Holt, Fred, Frank, Bob, and Jerry Marshall.

A memorial service was conducted Monday in Ohio with Pastor Eric Mounts officiating.

Additionally, a funeral service was held in Bloomfield on Tuesday. Burial was in Walnut Hill Cemetery at Odon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southgate Baptist Church, 2111 S. Center Blvd., Springfield, Ohio, 45506 designated for the benefit of widows and orphans in Kosovo.
