Steve Smith, 69, of Koleen and formerly of Indianapolis, passed away at 10 p.m. on Wednesday Nov. 1, 2006 at his home.
He was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Beech Grove, the son of Leland (Bud) and Mabelle (Vise) Smith.
He was active in the Boy Scouts and DeMolay, Master Counselor in 1954. He graduated from Beech Grove High School in 1956 and attended Hanover and Franklin Colleges. An avid fan of aviation, he received his private pilot license in 1961. He served in the Air Force Reserves from 1961-1966, with active duty during the Cuban missle crisis in 1962. He was a member of the Beech Grove Masonic Lodge No. 694, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine Temple and Past President of the Flying Fezzes. In 1995 he retired as co-owner of Smith Packing Company in Indianapolis, a meat business started in 1935 by his father and grandfather. He has lived near Koleen since 1996 and raised beef cattle.
He is survived by his wife, Karen (Pozdol) Smith, formerly of Indianapolis and Downers Grove, IL., married in 1977; three daughters, Lea and husband Joe Martin, of Indianapolis, Cara & Sarah Smith, of Danville; two stepdaughters, Jennifer L. Freeman, of Indianapolis, & Cindy and husband Tim Powers of Pittsboro, one stepson Scott and wife, Jennifer Freeman, of Fishers; a brother Roger L. and wife Janet Smith of Indianapolis; four grandchildren: Grace Bush, Sophia Smith, Chase and Abigail Freeman; two nieces Jennifer Charboneau of Naperville, IL., and Margot Patzer of Norfolk, VA., and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Brown and his parents.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Michael Madden at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Bloomfield at 10 a.m. on Monday . A masonic service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Little & Sons Funeral Home 4901 East Stop 11 Road in Indianapolis. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis with Father Dave Purvis officiating.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at Little & Sons Funeral Home in Indianapolis from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. till the hour of service on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greene County Hospice or Beech Grove Masonic Lodge No. 694.
