Phillip Benefiel, Jr. 66, of Washington, passed away at 1:43 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9 at Daviess County General Hospital in Washington.
Born Jan. 23, 1940 in Pleasantville, he was the son of Phillip H. and Lorene (Goodman) Benefiel.
He was a member of the Pleasantville United Methodist Churchy and a graduate of Pleasantville High School. He went on to receive a degree from Michigan State University to become a ferrier. He worked closely with his parents in Standard Breed horse racing as a trainer and driver. He was a retired coal miner and former sawmill owner as well as a truck driver and farmer. He was also an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church.
Survivors include: twin children Max Edward Benefiel and Lisa Ann Limbach, both of Washington; a brother Dr. Danny Joe Benefiel of Aurora, IL; and seven grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret Ellen Althoff Benefiel; and his second wife, Claire Mathena Auberry Benefiel.
Funeral service was Sunday at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger with the Rev. Jim Bill Benefiel and the Rev. George Faith officiating. Cremation followed and burial will be in Pleasantville Cemetery.
