Betty J. Backes, 82, of Waterloo and formerly of Elk Run Heights, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006 at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Hymera, the daughter of Jess and Elizabeth Bedwell Custer.
She married William F. Backes on Nov. 14, 1945 in Salinas, Calif., and he died on Dec. 25, 1981.
Backes worked for five years at Chamberlin Manufacturing, Housekeeping at Allen Memorial Hospital for 2 1/2 years, and was also a Senior Companion.
She is survived by: five sons, Frank (Linda) Backes of Waterloo, Joseph (Debra) Backes of Derby, Kan., Steven (Becky) Backes of Gilbertville, Dennis (Patty) Backes of Jesup, Jim (Gina) Backes of Elk Run Heights; three daughters, Sharon (Andy) Robinson of Colorado Springs, Col., Mary (Rick) Anderson of Waterloo, Patty (Nick) Weber of Garrison; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one sister Reba Griffith of Indiana.
She was preceded in death by: her husband; one son, John Backes; four brothers, Frank, Bud, Burt and Jumbo Bose and two sisters Thelma and Ruth.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Queen of Peace Parish with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at Kearns, Huisman -- Schumacher Chapel on Kimball with a rosary service at 4 p.m and a scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour before the service at the church.
