Marie A. Van Horn, 93, of Coal City, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at her home.

Born May 2, 1912 in Kalamazoo, Mich., she was the daughter of Charles W. Van Horn, Sr. and Minnetta Pearl Blackketter Van Horn.

As a young girl she was baptized in the Coal City Church of Christ and was a member. She was raised in Coal City and graduated from Coal City High School. She graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching endorsement. She later furthered her education with a Masters degree and post graduate studies. She primarily taught Chemistry, beginning her teaching career at Spencer, and then later at Tunnelton, Frankfort, and Hammond. She also taught for a time at Vincennes University. She concluded her teaching years at Indianapolis Shortridge High School, and lived in Indianapolis during her years teaching there. She was there for several years before retiring in 1977. Following retirement, she moved back to the home place in Coal City. She continued tutoring students for many years and always kept her mind active. She made quilts, did sewing, and was proficient in knitting all her life.

Survivors include: two sisters, Mabel Tennant of Linton and Joy Anne Van Horn of Coal City; four nieces and five nephews; 26 great-nieces and nephews; 26 great-great nieces and nephews; and three great-great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John B. Van Horn and Charles W. Van Horn, Jr., two nephews, Harold W. Van Horn, and Mark Van Horn, and one niece Marilyn Jo Van Horn.

Funeral service will be Thursday at noon at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, Coal City, with Pastor David Grafe officiating. Burial will follow at Beech Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Bloomington Hospital Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
