UNIONDALE -- John W. McBride, 86, formerly of Jasonville, passed away at 5:20 a.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Canterbury Nursing and Rehabilitation in Fort Wayne.

Born March 23, 1920 in Gilmore, he was the son of Ralph Sr. and Hattie (Williams) McBride of Jasonville.

After graduating from Dugger High School, he served as a member of the Conservation Civilian Corps in Worthington and was an Army veteran of World War II. A graduate of Indiana State University and Ball State University, he was an educator for 34 years, serving as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools in Henry, Delaware, and Wells counties. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Bluffton, the Lions Club, and the Full Gospel Society.

Survivors include: his wife Shirley (Coon) McBride of Uniondale; two daughters, Carolyn and her husband Les Newman of Linton, and Janice and her husband Van Huntman of St. Port Lucie, Fla.; a stepson and stepdaughter; four grandchildren, Scott, Deanne, Sheryl, and Jana; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, Katherine, Alyssa, Zachary, Miranda, and Reagan; three sisters, Inez and her husband Herman Funk of Linton, Betty and her husband Richard Stevenson of Jasonville, and Ruth and her husband Coan Whitlock of Farmersburg; a brother Charles (Ray) McBride of Jasonville; a sister-in-law Mrs. Ralph (Madalyn) McBride, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James McBride and Ralph McBride, Jr., and two sisters, Eunice McBride and Bonnie McBride.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Goodwin Memorial Chapel, 3220 E State Road 124, Bluffton, with Dr. Gene Bell and Pastor Wayne Ball officiating. Burial will be at Thrailkill Cemetery in Swayzee. Graveside service will be at the cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Friends may call today from 4-8 p.m. at the chapel.
