Gene W. Hayes, 91, of Bloomfield, passed away at 5:35 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006 at Greene County General Hospital in Linton.
Born Dec. 3, 1914 in Jasonville, he was the son of Vernon Hayes and Hulda Workman.
He was the owner and operator of G.W. Hayes Insurance in Bloomfield until he retired in 1989. He also worked as a farmer and a construction worker. He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, the Solsberry Masonic Lodge, the Indianapolis Scottish Rite, Terre Haute Shrine, Solsberry American Legion, Worthington VFW, was past president of the Greene County Shrine Club, Bloomfield OES, past president of the Bloomfield Town Council, past president of the Greene County Council, and past president of the Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include: three sons, Donald Hayes of Springville, Warren Hayes of Switz City, and Larry Hayes of Bloomfield; two daughters, Irene Davis of Bloomfield, and Joan Gater of Dugger; a stepdaughter Virginia Daupert of Indianapolis; a brother Jack Hayes of Bloomfield; four sisters, Mary Nation of Sullivan, Betty Martindale of Bloomfield, Veda Hall of Seattle, Wash., and Linda Helms of Bloomfield; seven grandsons, Garry W. Davis, Steve Davis, Matthew Hayes and Aaron Gater, all of Bloomfield, Mark Hayes of Bloomington, Scott Hayes of Pennsylvania, and Christopher Hayes of Washington; nine granddaughters, Gloria J. Hudson of Bloomfield, Candis Jackson of Medora, Angela Wise of Switz City, Melony Gaither of California, Shyla Horsely of Terre Haute, Beth Martin of Sandborn, Lynn May of Washington, Rachael Foster of Sullivan, and Marilla Gater of Dugger; five step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Edith (Bland) Hayes, who passed away in 1968, his second wife Gladys May (Hamilton) Hayes, who passed away in 1991, three brothers, John R., Mike, and Robert Hayes, a daughter Gloria Jean Hayes, a sister Geneva Jenkins, two grandsons, and two great-grandsons.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home Bloomfield with the Rev. Lynn Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery in Bloomfield. Military services will be conducted by the Solsberry American Legion.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today, and one hour prior to service Tuesday at the funeral home.
