BLOOMINGTON -- Ruth Esther Deykes, 73, formerly of Bloomington, passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at her home in Chugiak, Alaska.
Born Feb. 2, 1932 in Dunmore, Pa., she was the daughter of Anthony and Grace Bonarrigo. She married her high school sweetheart Lowell Deykes. They had been together for 51 years before he passed away.
A 1949 graduate of Dunmore High School, she went on to work as a seamstress for the Scranton Garment Mfr., in Dunmore. She served in the U.S. Air Force, Airman Third Class (Radio Mechanic). After moving to Bloomington in 1965, she became the Assistant Manager for JoAnn Fabrics, receptionist at Sarkes Tarzian, Senior Records Clerk in the Audio Visual Department, Indiana University, and also worked at K-Mart East and University Elementary School. She was a member of the Omega Phi Tau Sorority, past president of the Elks Ladies Organization, B.P.O.E 446, and with her husband Lowell, worked on the Elks Clothe-a-child and Cancer Fly-In, and many more philanthropic project. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt and gifted friend and will be missed by all.
Survivors include: a sister Angie Gyza of Dunmore, Pa.; seven children, Lowell T. Deykes, Jr. of Austin Texas, Wayne R. Deykes of Chugiak, Alaska, Ruth L. Tucker of Spencer, Sandra L. Vincent of Bloomington, Patricia A. Harping of Nashville, Robin C. Deykes of Silver Springs, Md., and Michael J. Deykes of Bloomfield; seven grandchildren, Erika, Andrea, Michelle, Giselle, Christian, Sierra, and Piper; and her two faithful Miniature Schnauzers, Buddy and Rosie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lowell T. Deykes, her brothers Dom and Jim Colengelo and Paul, Marty and Anthony Bonarrigo, her sisters, Angela Colengelo, Maryanne Kimmel, Carmel Miller, and Nebbie Kotchick and one grandson Marc Allan.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at Allen Funeral Home, Bloomington. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens with the Veterans Honor Guard having military rites.
Friends may call Thursday from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Omega Phi Tau Sorority will have a service at 7 p.m.
