GREENWOOD -- Ralph E. Thompson, 82, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005 at his home with his family.
Born March 14, 1923 in Greene County, he was the son of William and Eathel (Casner) Thompson. On Nov. 14, 1947, he married Gwendolyn (Watkins) Thompson. They were married for 55 years before she passed away.
He was a husband, father, veteran and friend. He retired from the Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op in Indianapolis in 1983 after 38 years of service. He served in the Army during World War II as a Quartermaster in the European Theater. A courageous yet quiet man, he overcame cancer three times prior. He yielded to the disease in his usual quiet, dignified manner.
Survivors include: two sons, Shannon Thompson and his wife Patt of Greenwood and Kenny Thompson and his wife Glenda of Plainfield; a daughter Tara and her husband Jeff Bryson of Darnestown, Md.; seven grandchildren, Brad Thompson and his wife Stephanie of Greenwood, Justin Thompson and his wife Becky of Greenwood, Nicole Thompson of Indianapolis, Corey Thompson of Plainfield, Kacie Thompson of Plainfield, Matt Bryson of Darnestown, Md., and Katie Bryson of Darnestown, Md.; a step-granddaughter Stephanie Ward of Kettering, Ohio; two great-granddaughters, Grace Thompson and Renee Thompson; niece and nephews, Carolyn and her husband Ray Rash of Bloomfield, Norman Swango and his wife Barbara of Sullivan, and John R. Takacs and his wife Sandy of Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gwendolyn and two sisters, Evelyn Swango and Elizabeth VanMeter.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood, with Pastor Mitch Ripley officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Divine Promise.
Visitation was Sunday at the funeral home.
