VALIER ---- Otis R. Smith, 76, of Valier, Ill., and formerly of the Jasonville area, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005 in Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Ill.
Born Feb. 5, 1929 in Clay County, he was the son of Charles and Louise (Knight) Smith. On March 19, 1950 in Midland, he married Doris (Gadberry) Smith.
He retired as a coal miner from Old Ben 26 and was a boss at the mine for nine years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Valier.
Survivors include: his wife Doris of Valier; two daughters, Cheryl and her husband Phil Hulen of Kernersville, N.C., and Theresa and her husband John Smith of West Frankfort, Ill.; five grandchildren, Lisa Smith, Jaret Hulen, Jeremy Hulen, Lori Smith and Frank Justin Hulen; three great-grandchildren; and four brothers and sisters, Leon and Mary Smith of Sullivan, Dale Smith of Linton, Laveda Carr of Dugger, and Juanita Bose of Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Ronald Smith, and a brother Russell Smith.
Service was Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Valier, Ill., with the Rev. Harl Ray Lewis officiating. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Valier.
Gilbert Funeral Home of Christopher, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.
