Vernon L. Slinkard

FORTVILLE ---- Vernon L. Slinkard, 90, of Fortville, passed away Friday, June 10, 2005, at John Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.

Born November 8, 1914 in Daviess County near Newberry, he was the son of Harve and Lenore (Strickland) Slinkard.

He was a mechanic and retired from J.C. Penney's Auto Service in Anchorage, Alaska in 1983. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. During his retirement years, he did both chainsaw and hand woodcarving, winning numerous awards for his work. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1932 and was a member of the Newberry Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include: two daughters, Nancy Lee and her husband Glenn Alldredge, and Suzanne Keyes, all of Greenfield; two sons, Jon Slinkard of Greenfield, and Ted Slinkard of Fortville; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vera (St. John) Slinkard, who passed away in 1996, two brothers, Porter and Lester and a sister Nova Ault.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Poindexter-Hall-McClure Funeral Home in Odon with the Rev. James Richey officiating. Burial will follow at Newberry Cemetery.

Friends may call one hour before service on Saturday at the funeral home.
