SACRAMENTO, Calif. ---- Dr. Arthur W. Sherman, Jr., 87, of Sacramento, Calif., passed away Monday, March 14, 2005 at his residence after a short illness.

He was born Feb. 11, 1917 in Lakewood, Ohio.

Dr. Sherman was a Professor of Psychology at California State University, Sacramento. He was one of the first professors at the J Street location starting his career at CSUS in 1954 and teaching there for almost 40 years. During most of his career he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in organizational psychology, personnel psychology, human resources management, psychological testing, and professional development in psychology. He had serve as a consultant to several organizations including the Department of Consumer Affairs of the state of California and the Social Security Administration. For over 20 years he had a private practice as a licensed psychologist specializing in career counseling. He authored a college textbook, Managing Human Resources, published by South-Western College Publishing since its first edition in 1958 as well as Personnel Practices of American Companies in Europe, published by the American Management Association. As an undergraduate, he attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio and Ohio University in Athens, Ohio receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Ohio University. He met his wife while both were attending Ohio University in 1941. He received a M.A. from Indiana University in Bloomington and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Counseling Psychology from Ohio State University. He was editor of the Ohio State University yearbook in 1940. He was an accomplished organist and played theater organs in Lakewood, Ohio, in high school. He enjoyed summers at the family Lake Tahoe cabin, family gatherings, and trips to Bloomfield.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the 13th Air Force on the island of Moratai in the Philippines. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves.

Survivors include; his wife of 63 years Leneve (Crites) Sherman, formerly of Bloomfield; three daughters, Beverly, Judith and Sandra; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dale and Hope Crites; nieces, Julie and Sarah; and nephews, Tom, Dan and Jimmy.

Services will be private.
