Thursday, February 24, 2005

MISHAWAKA ---- Charles Franklin Owens, 66, of Mishawaka and formerly of Marco, passed away at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at Fountainview Place in Mishawaka.

Chuck, as he was known to family and friends, was born May 8, 1938 in Marco to Pearl Mildred Kinnaman and Dodridge Archie Owens, one of 11 children and the last survivor of the family. On Oct. 15, 1960, he married Sharon Lou Personette, whom he met in Mishawaka, at the East United Methodist Church.

He played varsity basketball for Marco High School, where he graduated in 1958. He then moved to Mishawaka, where his brother and uncle were living, to find employment. He started work at Uniroyal on Jan. 2, 1959, and retired in April 1991 after 32 years of service. He then went to work at Century Foam in Elkhart in 1992 and retired in 2004. He was a member of East United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, and was active in the Koinonia Sunday School Class. He assisted the Koinonia Class in its annual fundraiser making and selling peanut brittle. Many of his co-workers at Uniroyal were his best customers. In 1992 Chuck and Sharon assisted a district committee planning a new church in Granger. They became charter members of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Granger. In 1994 and 1996, they had the opportunity to travel with a Mission Marketing work team to Jamaica, where they served as missioners and construction workers doing repairs on church buildings. While there they observed the sheer poverty of the people in the villages on the little island known to most Americans as a tourist resort area.

Survivors include: his wife Sharon Owens of Mishawaka; a son John Charles Owens and his wife Nevina of Mishawaka; two grandsons, Shayne C. Owens and Dominick Owens; two sisters-in-law, Janet Owens of South Bend and Ida Sullivan of New Market, Ala.; five nieces, Diane Fox of Riverview, Fla., Connie Peli of South Bend, Bonnie Roberts of Elkhart, Sarah Brewer of Manchester, Tenn., and Sandra Hicklen of Dryden, N.Y.; four nephews, James Owens Jr. of Mishawaka, Louis Owens Jr. and David Owens of Elkhart, and Steve Owens of Huntsville, Ala.; and 18 great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Alta Bernice Wooldridge, three brothers, James Robert Owens, Wallace R. Owens, and Louis R. Owens, as well as six brothers and sisters who died as young children. Also preceding him in death was a sister-in-law Virginia (Jenny) Owens and a brother-in-law Francis Sullivan.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.
