Harold W. Byrd, 78, of Crane, passed away at 1:35 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, 2004 at Daviess Community Hospital in Washington.
Born Dec. 25, 1925 in Knox County, he was the son of Craven and Pearl (VanMeter) Byrd. He was married Nov. 29, 1947 to Beverly (Beachler) Byrd.
He retired from the Transportation Department with NSWC Crane and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Crane VFW and the Loogootee American Legion and a member of the Am Vets in Owensburg.
Survivors include: his wife Beverly (Beachler) Byrd of Crane; three sons, Gary Byrd of Bloomfield, Larry and his wife Patricia Byrd of Bloomfield, and Rocky and his wife Patti Byrd of Loogootee; two daughters, Melody and her husband Bill Riggs of Bloomfield and Tracy and her husband Reed Nonte of Bloomfield; six sisters, Mary Jane Palmer of Lawrenceville, Ill., Margie Hoffman of Alabama, Wanda Mae Applegate of Bicknell, Bernice Jones of Ottawa, Ill., Shirley Anderson of Florida, and Betty McCullough of Vincennes; nine grandchildren, James Byrd of Bloomington, Brian Byrd of Crane, Jeremy Byrd of Oak Park, Mich., Nikki Hayden of Loogootee, Amie Howell of Wilmington, Justin Byrd of Loogootee, Jarredd Byrd of Jasper, Ashlee Byrd of Evansville, and Jessica Nonte of Bloomfield; and four great-grandchildren, Marcus Byrd of Bloomington, Keelan Hayden of Loogootee, Lucas Byrd of Bloomington, and Jaeden Byrd of Oak Park, Mich.
He was preceded in death by an infant son Jerry Byrd in 1949 and one granddaughter Lindsey Nonte.
Graveside memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at Oaktown City Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW.
There will be no visitation. The Brocksmith Funeral Home in Loogootee is in charge of arrangements.
