Stella Burkett Owens, 97, of Jasonville, passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004 at Shakamak Good Samaritan Center in Jasonville.
Born Aug. 23, 1907 at Island, Ky., she was the daughter of Aaron and Sallie (White) Gardner. She had been married to Ory E. "Buck" Burkett, who passed away July 1, 1972. She then married Ralph Owens, who passed away in 1979.
As a young woman, she was head of recreation of Glenburn Church in Linton. She worked in a Bomber Air Plane Plant in Michigan during World War II; and along with her husband, Buck Burkett, owned and operated the Cozy Inn Restaurant in Jasonville for over 20 years. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Brownsburg.
Survivors include: two daughters, Elbertine "Bert" Crowe of Indianapolis and Mary Jane and her husband Dale Faught of Jasonville; a step-son Sonny Owens of Watzeka, Ill.; three sisters, Mabel Usrey of Linton, Juanita Knowles of Linton, and Mercedes "Mac" Kaiser of Lima, Ohio; one brother Earl "Herb" and his wife Ruth Gardner of Jasonville; a sister-in-law Lorene Gardner of Jasonville; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; six step great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Ory "Buck" Burkett; her second husband Ralph Owen; one daughter Laura Burkett in 1931; and one son Billy Burkett in 1992.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home in Jasonville with the Rev. John Booker officiating. Burial will be in K of P Cemetery in Hymera.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
