GREENWOOD ---- Ray A. Gainey, 80, of Greenwood and formerly of Bloomfield, passed Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at 10:20 a.m. at Community South Hospital in Greenwood.

Born Feb. 1, 1924, in Greene County, he was the son of Thurman and Lovia (Fitzpatrick) Gainey.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He worked as a pressman for The Evening World newspaper in Bloomfield and had worked at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis as a lab technician in the insulin department. He was retired.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Newkirk Gainey of Greenwood; two sons, Ray Cameron Gainey of Indianapolis and Tony Gainey of Prescott, Ariz.; two daughters, Jamie Ryan and Terri Green, both of Indianapolis; a sister, Ruth E. Gainey of Indianapolis; a sister-in-law, Frances Gainey of Bloomfield; brother-in-law, James Newkirk of Linton; eight grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Willard Gainey; two sisters, Grace Laughlin and Mary Fiscus; and a granddaughter, Nicki Earle.

Services were 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home in Greenwood.
