John E. "Jack" Abbott, 68, of Linton, passed away at 6:58 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, 2003 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
Born March 1, 1935 in Potomac, Ill., he was the son of Ruel and Hazel (Stump) Abbott.
He was a retired general foreman for Amax Coal Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, a member of the First Baptist Church in Linton, and an avid golfer. He enjoyed woodworking and Indiana University sports, worked with the youth baseball teams and enjoyed his grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Fran (Hall) Abbott of Linton; son and daughter-in-law, Herb and Katie Abbott of Linton; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Ed Moreno of North Vernon; four grandchildren, Kayla and Craig Moreno of North Vernon, and Jamie and Jessie "Peanut" Abbott of Linton; a brother, Herschel Abbott of Chandler; and a sister, Pauline Klein of Hoopeston, Ill.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Hester Carpenter; six brothers, Harold, Howard, Hollie, Harlan, Homer, and Dick Abbott; and his parents.
Funeral service will be at Welch & Cornett Linton Chapel at 1 p.m. on Tuesday with the Rev. David Tyra officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton. Military graveside rites will be by the American Legion Post 22 in Linton.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today, and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.
