CASCADE, Md. ---- Retired Senior Chief Freddie M. "Fred" Bowers, 68, of Cascade, Md., passed away at 11:15 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 in the Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, N.C.
Born Oct. 18, 1934 in Elnora, he was the son of William E. and Dorothy Helen (Allen) Bowers.
He graduated from Sandborn High School in 1952.
He served in the U.S. Navy "SeaBees" for 30 years in Korea and served three tours in Vietnam. He served with the 1st Construction Unit to build Little America in Antarctica for two years. While stationed at Camp David, he served under three U.S. presidents, Nixon, Ford, and Carter. He retired in 1980 at Port Hueneme, Calif. Following his retirement from the military, he was employed in the maintenance department and as a mechanic for Frederick Ford Motor Co. He was a member of Edwin C. Creeger American Legion Post 168; Thurmont, Md., Old Antarctic Explorers Association, Inc., Antarctica Reunion, Sea Bees Retirees Club; and the National AARP.
Survivors include, his wife, Teena (Phillips) Bowers of Cascade, Md.; one daughter, Beth A. Theis of Rouzerville, Pa.; two sons, Frederick Allan Bowers of Hampton, Va., and Kevin E. Bowers of Beacon, N.Y.; three step children, Mark W. Henderson of Easley, S.C., Jackie M. Henderson of New Market, Md., and Philip B. Henderson of Pickens, S.C.; seven grandchildren; two great granddaughters; seven step grandchildren; one brother, Joseph L. Bowers of Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, L. Marie (Nelson) Bowers on Feb. 22, 1999.
Funeral service will be at the Germantown Church of God at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Paul Tobias officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade, Md., with military honors conducted by the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg, Pa.
