Sherell W. Johnson, Sr., 92, of Linton, passed away at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at his residence in Linton.
Born April 7, 1911 in Colorado, he was the son of Charles W. and Ollie (Grey) Johnson.
The Johnson Feed & Supply Company started in 1914 with a small flock of chickens from England. The business was located across from the Linton Fire Station and he started there in the 1920s. The Johnson family owned feed stores in Clay, Greene, Sullivan, and Vigo counties. He was co-owner of Johnson Mill & Elevator in Sullivan and Evansville. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, BPO Elk Lodge 866; past member of the Rotary Club, all of Linton. He was a member of the Marching One Hundred Band at Indiana University. He traveled the country with a circus band at a young age, had a 14-piece orchestra that played at many local functions and had a one-hour radio program in the Wabash Valley which he opened by singing "You'll Like Linton." He was an avid golfer.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Sherell Jr. and Ann (Hastings) Johnson of Waynesville, N.C.; grandson, Tom Johnson of Asheville, N.C.; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Julie and Nick Roknich of Maggie Valley, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Katie, Elizabeth and Nick Roknich IV, all of Maggie Valley, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary F. (Brown) Johnson, on March 11, 1999; sister, Lucille Lynn; and his parents.
Funeral service will be at Welch & Cornett Linton Chapel at 11 a.m. on Friday with the Rev. Hershel Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. today, and after 9 a.m on Friday until the hour of service.
