WRV baseball team loses to South Knox
White River Valley pitchers were too generous, giving up 10 walks and hitting two batters as the Wolverines opened the season with a 10-6 loss at South Knox Thursday.
"Ten walks and two hit batters equals 12 free bases," said first-year WRV coach Eric Lyons. "Our pitchers struggled with their control."
Adam Langhans was the starting and losing pitcher. In three innings, he yielded four hits, five runs, four earned, with four walks and two strikeouts. Brandt Zimmerly also gave up five runs, four earned, and four walks in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Chris Smith had two walks, but did not allow any hits in his 1 1/3 innings.
Lyons had a lot of praise for the defense, which made just two errors.
"Our defense did an outstanding job," he said. "The team played well defensively. We were three out of three in rundowns.
"Todd Abu-Seir was solid behind the plate. Ben Maners was outstanding in center field. Chuck Seger and Adam Langhans played solid at third base. Joey Stanley and Chris Smith/Brandt Zimmerly were solid up the middle."
The Wolverines scored two runs in the first inning.
Smith led off with a single, stole second base and came home on an RBI single by Zimmerly. Brandt then stole a base, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out to first by Stanley, giving the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.
South Knox, who improved to 2-0, scored five runs in the first two innings.
The Wolverines added four runs in their final at bat.
Gerren Cullison led off the seventh with a walk. Smith, who reached with a single, and pinch runner Danny Navarro both scored on a base hit to left field by Stanley, giving him three RBIs.
Abu-Seir's hit to center dropped, scoring Stanley. He later scored on a double steal.
"Of our 13 Ks on offense, seven were called third strikes," said Lyons. "We must take the bat off our shoulder when we're down in the count.
"The team played hard and never let up. This team will win some ball games. They are going to be a fun team to watch."
