He was born in Clay City on May 12, 1922, the son of Levi E. and Rebecca Anna (Starret) Shields. On November 30, 1946, he married Wilma E. "Jean" Rhodes.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II. During his military career he was the recipeint of five Combat Awards which included four Bronze Stars and one of the 38th Division "Avengers of Bataan." He later worked at the Crane Navel Base for 26 years, retiring in 1972.
In addition, Jim, along with his wife, Jean, opened the Shield's Ace Hardware Store in 1968 and served as the President of the business until 1997. Jim held also several electronic circuitry patents. He was a member of VFW Post No. 7118 and the Frank Courtney American Legion Post No. 22, both located in Linton.
Survivors include: his wife of 60 years Jean Shields, sons, Fred A. (Mary) Shields and James D. (Denise) Shields; a daughter, Janette E. (Bob) Evans -- all of Linton, and grandson, Levi (Tina) Shields of Bloomfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters.
The family has requested memorial contributions be made to the 38th Division Association "The Avengers of Bataan", 3912 W. Minnesota St. Indianapolis, IN 46241-4064.
Friends may call at Anderson-Poindexter Funeral Home from 5-8:00 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service on Monday.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday with Rev. Hilary Vieck officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton with full military graveside rites.
