Blessed Hope Baptist Church

Christmas cantata

Blessed Hope Baptist is having Christmas cantata during its 10:30 a.m. morning service on Dec. 23 at 10:30 a.m. The service will have special music as well as a special message give by Pastor Jerry Ross concerning Christmas.

Scotland Christmas

Scotland is not having Christmas in the Village or Santa this year. But, local vendors will be set up for in the firehouse on Saturday.

Solsberry Church coat giveaway

The Solsberry Christian Church VBS students raised money to give fans away during the warm weather and are now in the process of a cold weather coat giveaway. If you need a coat or know of someone who does, please contact Aaron Miller (812) 825-5222 (ext. 3) to schedule an appointment to pick up a coat.

Missionaries to speak

Nathan and Bethany Scott will share their Thailand missionary experiences during the 9:30 a.m. Dec. 2 service at Trinity Lutheran Church-- which is located on State Road 54 in Linton. There will be a time for fellowship and further information at 10:45 a.m. with a spaghetti dinner following at noon. Donations will accepted and all proceeds go to the Scott ministry. Greene County Humane Society

The Greene County Humane Society is accepting stocking stuffers for its dogs and cats. Donations can include chew toys and Rawhide Bones of all sizes for dogs and jingle balls and baking soda for its cats. Stocking are hung on each kennel.

Family Life Center collecting toys

The Family Life Center will be collecting toys at the White River Valley boys basketball game versus South Knox today at 6:30 p.m. at the WRV High School gym. The toys will be given to needy children for Christmas gifts this holiday season. Each person bringing a toy to donate will be given free admission to the game.

Habitat open house

Habitat for Humanity of Greene Count will host an open house for the Jasonville Habitat homes on Dec. 16 between 1-2:30 p.m. The dedication of the house follows on the same day at Shakamak cafeteria at 3 p.m.

HIV testing

The Greene County Health Department is offering free, confidential HIV testing from 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 6. Scheduled appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome. The department is located at 217 E. Spring St. in Bloomfield. To schedule an appointment call 384-4469 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Greene County General Auxiliary Christmas party

Greene County General Auxiliary's Christmas party will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 in the cafeteria.

Basket and tool bingo

The Greene County Soccer Association will host a basket and Craftsman tool bingo Dec. 3 at the Linton Elks. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and bingo starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $10. Call 847-9163 for more information.

Middle Way House meeting

Recently, Middle Way House was awarded a community readiness grant from the CARE Initiative, through Purdue University. The purpose of the grant is to improve community capacity in the prevention of sexual assault and rape. On Dec. 4, a public planning meeting will be held at noon at the Extension Office conference room in Switz City. Sausage biscuit breakfast

The Jasonville Senior Citizen Center will host a sausage and biscuit breakfast from 7- 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 7. The center is located at 145 S. Lawton Street. Carry-out is available.

Greene County singles

Greene County Singles will host a dance and silent auction Saturday at the 4-H Fairgrounds. Doors open at 6:20 p.m., dinner is at 7 p.m., and the dance from 8- 11 p.m. A silent auction is scheduled for 10 p.m.

Dinner and a movie

Scotland United Methodist Church will host a dinner and a movie Sunday. Church services begin at 10:30 a.m. At noon pizza, chips, drinks, and dessert will be served in the church basement. At 1 p.m. "The Nativity Story" will be shown in the sanctuary. Call 384-3235 to RSVP.

Eastern Greene baseball fundraiser

Support Eastern Greene Baseball by eating out Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria before the first home varsity/junior varsity boys basketball game with Brown County. Dinner will include chili (various choices will be available, including vegetarian chili), crackers, a dessert and drink for only $5/adult, $3/student, and $15/family.

Jeffrey Leever book signing

Jeffrey Leever who placed the location of his recent novel, "Dark Friday," in Jasonville, Ind. will be visiting the Jasonville Library between 1 -- 4 p.m. on Dec. 1 for book signings and a question and answer session. "Dark Friday" is about a journalist who travels to a small Indiana town to investigate a series of murders and discovers a conspiracy involving local teens.

Shakamak junior class parents

The Shakamak Junior Class Parents will be collecting aluminum cans to recycle Saturday during the Christmas Festival. There will be a designated collection place in the parking lot.

Santa Claus in Linton

Santa's hours in downtown Linton are Nov. 30 from 4 - 6 p.m., Dec. 1 from 1- 4 p.m., Dec. 7 from 4 - 6 p.m., Dec. 8 workshop closed. Visit Santa as he arrives by train courtesy of the Indiana Railroad on Dec. 8. Dec.14 from 4 - 6 p.m., Dec. 15 from 1 - 4 p.m., Dec. 21 from 4 - 6 p.m., Dec. 22 from 1 - 4 p.m.

Fruit sale

The Bloomfield Lions Club will be conducting its annual fruit sale at the end of the month (Nov. 29) from Florida's Indian River Groves. Twenty pound boxes of oranges and ruby red grapefruits are $16 per box. Split boxes are also available. For more information contact Max Floyd at 384-4941 or Stan Budny at 384-8907. All proceeds will go towards the scholarship project.

SR 54 closed for railroad repair

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that it will be closing a portion of State Road 54 in Greene and Sullivan counties starting Nov. 26. The road will be closed from the junction of US 41 in Sullivan to the junction of SR 59 in Linton. The Indiana Railroad Company will be rebuilding their crossing, four miles west of SR 59. Crews will begin reconstruction of the crossing at 7 a.m. on Nov. 26 and anticipate having the crossing completed by the end of the day on Friday, November 30. No through vehicle traffic will be allowed, however local residents will have access to the point of closure. All lanes of traffic will be closed at the crossing. The official detour will follow US 41, SR 48 and SR 59.

Goose Pond photo contest

Attention amateur photographers and wildlife enthusiasts: Friends of Goose Pond, a non-profit organization, is sponsoring a calendar photo contest featuring photos shot at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area within the past two years. Suggested photo subjects include landscapes, seasons, activities, flora and fauna. The contest is open to amateur photographers of all ages. Winning photos with photographer credits will be published in a 2009 calendar. Salvation Army

The Greene County Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to act as bellringers from Nov. 23- Dec. 31. To volunteer call at 847-3224 after 4 p.m.

Road closure

County Road 1000 West (Lone Tree Road) between 300 N. and 400 N. will be closed beginning Oct. 22 for bridge replacement. This project is to be completed in 45 working days.

Fundraiser for BHS Class of 2009

The Bloomfield class of 2009 is selling Cardinal Discount Cards for $5. These cards are available at the main office of Bloomfield State Bank and Farmers and Mechanics Savings and Loans. These cards offer continuous discounts for one full year (expires November 2008). Cardinal Calendars are also available, and sell for $4 and list all Bloomfield School District activities. Dugger Legion to meet

The Rexford Ballard American Legion Post 224 will meet the first and third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

Jasonville Senior center update

The Jasonville Senior Citizen Center, located at 145 S. Lawton, has opened a country store and gift shop. It will be open from 9 a.m.-noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All proceeds will benefit the senior center. For more information, call the center at 665-9882.

Wig bank

The American Cancer Society announced its wig program is now being offered to cancer patients at Pam's Style Shop in Bloomfield. Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous will meet Saturdays at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church on State Road 54 East. There will be open discussion and all are welcome.

Black Lung assistance

The Black Lung Benefits Assistance counselor will be at Glenburn Community Center (5th St. NW and Glenburn Road) the first Wednesday of each month, 9:30-11 a.m., to assist with Federal Black Lung applications and forms. For more information call (812) 240-3459 or (866) 282-9553.

Food pantry

Lebanon Baptist Food Pantry will only be open on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m.

Bloomfield Food pantry

The Refuge Assembly of God food pantry will be open every Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. to assist those living in Bloomfield. To donate, please contact Trina at 384-8093 during the pantry's open hours.

Worthington Senior Center

Worthington Senior Citizen Center has low-impact exercise sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.
