Mildred Pope, 80, of Linton, passed away at 2:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton.

She was born June 29, 1927 in Indianapolis, the daughter of Harry and Laura Florence (Schrader) Wood.

She was a 1948 graduate of the Indiana University School of Nursing and was a registered nurse with the United States Army. She was co-owner of Pope Brothers Home Center since 1968, retiring in 2007. She was a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Linton and was active as a vacation bible school teacher and director of children's church for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Ferris Pope, to whom she was married Nov. 5, 1948; three daughters, Janet Ann Townsley and her husband, Jim, of Southington, Connecticut, Linda Sue Hert and her husband, Jim, of Dugger and Connie Lou Ralston and her husband, George, of Terre Haute; a brother, Herbert Leroy Wood of California; eight grandchildren, David, Jonathan and Sarah Townsley, Elizabeth Schwanke, Dr. Michael and Daniel Gamble, and Philip and Christina Ralston; and ten great-grandchildren, James, Esther, John David, Olivia, Anna, Emma, Abbi, Spencer, Japheth and Baylee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-granddaughter, Bridget Hert; two brothers, Richard and Harry Wood; and two sisters, Lena Schafer and Barbara Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Olive Branch Church with Revs. Myron Young and Dan Kemp officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery where grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
