Harold Thomas, 73, Jasonville, passed away at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at Sullivan County Community Hospital in Sullivan.
Born Nov. 19, 1934 in Greene County, he was the son of Claude and Cora Zurcher Thomas.
Rev. Thomas was a pastor for more than 50 years. He had preached at thge Friendly Grove Baptist Church since 1958. He was actively involved in the Shakamak Youth Camp - serving in many capacities with the Lewis Township Ministerial Association as well as the American Baptist Assocaition and the Indiana Baptist Associaiton. He served as chaplain for the Lewis Township Fire Department for more than 25 years and had served on the MSD of Shakamak Board of School Trustees. He retired from the Northeast Sullivan School Corporation where he had taught for 35 years -- serving as a driver's education instructor and athletic coach for basketball, baseball, football and track. He had also served with the Indiana National Guard.
Survivors include: his wife of more than 51 years, Betty (Swaby) Thomas, whom he married on June 12,1956; a son, Tim Thomas of Portage; son and daughter-in-law, David and Paula Thomas of Greenwood; a granddaughter, Danielle Thomas; a sister, Marie Markle of Linton; brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Naomi Thomas of Jasonville; a sister-in-law Betty Ellen Thomas of Bloomington; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kate Targett, Dorothy Keller and Betty Feuquay; brothers, a twin Gerald "Tye" Thomas, Cletus Thomas, Wayne Thomas and Walter William Thomas.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home in Jasonville with Pastor Frank Rogers and Pastor Sherman Reed officiating. Burial will be in Friendly Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Friendly Grove Baptist Church and Cemetery. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
